US telecommunications company AT&T has acquired rural wireless carrier Dobson Communications for US$2.8 billion in a bid to expand its geographical reach.

Dobson Communications markets wireless services under the Cellular One brand and provides roaming services to AT&T.

Its network covers rural and suburban areas across the US.

The deal comes one month after US wireless provider Alltel agreed to a US$25 billion takeover offer from TPG Capital and the buyout arm of Goldman Sachs.

The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval, which AT&T said it aims to get by the end of this year.
