OTDR testing made easy

Infrastructure solutions provider, Fluke Networks, has launched a new module to provide comprehensive extended fibre testing for cabling installers.

Infrastructure solutions provider, Fluke Networks, has launched a new module to provide comprehensive extended fibre testing for cabling installers.

The company has launched the DTX Compact OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) as a full featured module that snaps onto any DTX CableAnalyzer. Aimed primarily at cabling providers and installers, the OTDR adds extended fibre certification to the DTX CableAnalyzer, which was launched in 2004.

"The DTX Compact OTDR enables cable installers to test copper and fibre cables - both basic and extended certification - from one device alone. This means that installers can add to their copper capabilities of DTX CableAnalyzer without much additional investment and every technician can become a fibre tester. The capability provided by OTDR also opens new markets and opportunities for the installer thereby adding to his business," explained Werner Heeren (pictured), regional sales and marketing director for Eastern Europe and MEA at Fluke.

"Extended fibre testing is critical as it identifies faults that may be invisible to basic fibre certification. With the DTX Compact OTDR all information from the extended fibre testing can be uploaded to LinkWare software. This integrates testing across cables to one, unified software platform. The software is downloadable for free, as is the DTX software itself," said Hady de Grave, infrastructure product manager for Eastern Europe and MEA at Fluke.

Fluke says this module enables the company to provide the only integrated testing device for cabling providers and installers. The company says it will also make relevant training available to familiarise technicians with the module and its features.

The Fluke range constitutes other products including the OptiFiber Professional OTDR which is designed for testing by technicians in enterprise situations.
