The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of the UAE (the TRA) has launched ‘The UAE National Telecom Recycling Campaign' under the tagline ‘Don't let your old or broken mobile phone damage the natural beauty of the UAE'.

This new environmental initiative will allow owners of defunct mobile phones to dispose of their devices safely - at collection points across the UAE - whilst simultaneously gaining entry into a monthly prize draw and contributing to charity.

The scheme has been developed by the TRA in collaboration with the UAE Ministry of Environment & Water Resources, EnviroFone (which will recycle the handsets), telcos Etisalat and du, and local charity Gulf for Good.

For every phone collected by the scheme, five Dirhams will be given to Gulf for Good, plus each phone contributor will be entered into a monthly draw that features prizes ranging from trips to London to jewelry and air miles.

"Environmental awareness is one of the most important requirements for the nations' socioeconomic development," said H.E. Mohamed Al Ghanim, TRA board member and director general.

Elaborating on the fact that there are scarce spaces on Earth for industrial waste, Al Ghanim added that, "research and experiments proved that the leakage of the industrial waste leftovers is causing damage to the soil, and that is resulting in spreading diseases."
