Two down, two to go…

Kuwait City and Al Khobar last month hosted the fragging maelstrom that is the second ever Windows Gaming Championship (WGC2); the first time a PC tournament like this has been successfully rolled out across the Gulf. The fun is far from over however… as this month seriously big money prizes and enviable kudos come firmly into play.

|~|WGC-KSA-now---m.gif|~||~|It started in Kuwait City back on May 17 and 18, when over 120 button bashers converged on the city’s Souq Sharq Mall for a chance to blag thousands of US dollars in cash prizes and a ticket to our Dubai regional final at the end of June. The first day’s Counterstrike contest was lauded over by the smooth sniping Gameworks Clan, with our individual PES6 footie cup going to Abdullah Al Mashaan (playing Italy), easily the highest scorer of the contest’s massive 64 contestants. Suffice to say, this successful first WGC Gulf ‘hit’ got our team’s juices well and truly flowing, proving as it did that outside of the UAE there are just as many mad-for-it gamers keen to prove their mettle against their bullet-dodging, shot-making contemporaries. It also made us really look forward to round two, when for the first time WGC headed to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This round took place at Al Rashid Mall in Al Khobar, meaning it was perfectly geographically placed to attract avid Saudi gamers and travelers from Bahrain. Presented by regional headline sponsor LG Electronics but this time with additional support from gaming enabler ISP Awalnet and system provider Zai PC, this event saw over 150 gamers arrive en masse with our cash prizes and final tickets firmly in mind. In a boon for Windows Middle East too, the event is thought to have been the first PC gaming event ever run in the Kingdom by a regional technology publication. Quite a first. The first day’s Pro Evolution Soccer 6 tourney saw Brazil triumph, controlled by digital soccer supremo Mohammed Al Jaber, whilst of the 18 largely five-player Counterstrike teams involved in the second day’s frenzied play, team ‘ec’ was the one on the finest form, it whupping Team Illusion in the final by 16 to 7. But now is when it gets really interesting, as later this month - on June 22 and 23 - we have the UAE leg of WGC2, itself into its second year and already touting serious credibility with gamers in the Emirates. Dubai's Ibn Battuta Mall will see the country’s top PES6 strikers and Counterstrike clans go head-to-head, after which we’ll truly see who is top of their game as our Kuwait and KSA winners arrive for our June 23 evening Regional Final. With increased cash prizes, great product kit and oodles of gaming cred on offer, this looks set to be the Gulf’s most hotly fought gaming contest to date, so don’t miss your chance to get involved - sign up now over at ||**||
