Despite practical limitations, caused largely by the lack of a feature making tradition in the UAE, the company has successfully succeeded in producing and distributing the two hour, million dollar-plus movie. Whether or not Tarab Fashion represents the start of regular feature making in the UAE remains to be seen. As the film’s producer explains in our exclusive profile, local filmmakers are still missing many of the elements that features require, including a system of grants and subsidies, as well as access to facilities and technical personnel. Another key question is whether or not Arabic language films can cover their costs and make a profit. Media Group says it will be happy if Tarab Fashion, which is filmed in the distinctive Khaliji (Gulf) dialect, eventually covers its production costs. The good news is that Media Group wants to make more films in the UAE and give them a distinct Arabic flavour. However, these films are almost certain to be made in the English language. So whilst the UAE looks set to become a more popular destination for shoots, it may not be the first choice for Arabic language films.||**||
