The Second Annual Network Middle East Awards, of course, a showcase of the best networking end users and vendors, held last night at a glamorous ceremony in Dubai’s Crowne Plaza Hotel (look out for full coverage in next month’s issue). But just because the awards have been and gone for another year doesn’t mean that networking vendors and professionals should sit back, even those who have NME laurels to sit back on. NME is on a mission for the next year – a mission to root out the best implementations, products and network managers in the Middle East. This is – potentially – a very exciting time for network professionals in the region. Telco liberalisation and expansion is arriving at the same time as major surpluses from oil revenues are fuelling an economic boom across much of the Middle East. Emergent technologies such as RFID and wireless standards have the potential to change the way enterprises use their networks. And security concerns are ever on the rise, with more new threats uncovered every day, and virus writers and phishers becoming increasingly crafty. What does all of this mean for networking professionals? It should mean that there are unprecedented opportunities to shine, faced with all these opportunities and threats; a chance to show the world what you can do. And where does NME fit in? We want to hear about it; the successes, the challenges, the issues, the pain-points. We want to be your forum for debate, your opportunity to tell your peers – and the vendors – exactly what is important to you. We also want to show off the best of your work, and give network-heads across the region a chance to share best practice. Events such as the NME Awards are a perfect example of this, but we want to cover the best every month, not just once a year. So this is your chance: tell us about what you are doing, what you care about, what you want. Tell us if vendors are getting it right or wrong, and what they should do about it. And tell us if you agree with what people are saying in the magazine – let us know if we’re getting it right. My email address is eliot.beer@itp.com - I’ll be waiting for your mail. And maybe, just maybe, it’ll be you up there at the awards next year...||**||
