Sony has appointed one of its top executives to oversee product quality and safety in the wake of its recent battery crisis. Makoto Kogure previously headed up the company’s television division.

Dell recalled more than four million of Sony’s lithium-ion batteries on August 15 because they can cause laptops to overheat and, in rare cases, explode into flames. Apple followed suit, recalling 1.8 million batteries a few weeks later.

Sony estimated that costs for the combined recall could reach as much as US$250 million. The electronics giant said it had already taken measures to address the safety issue.

“Sony has introduced a number of additional safeguards into its battery manufacturing process to address this condition and to provide a greater level of safety and security,” the company said in a statement.
