Villa Moda is the first shopping complex in Kuwait to offer wireless connectivity to visitors as a value-add service. Using laptops with an Intel Centrino processor, PCMCIA wireless connectivity or other, customers connect to the internet free of charge during their visit, from anywhere within the complex covered by the service. Through the 256kbits/s ADSL wireless connection, they can check and send e-mails, make calls, download files or browse the Internet. The project involved implementing several access points, covering shops, restaurants and cafeterias within the complex. "The WLAN set-up consists of Cisco Series 1100 access points, and Dell switches between the access points and the internet connection, which in turn is through a 256kbits/s ADSL router into the local ISP," explains Ziad Bagh, network department manager Al Alamiah Computer Systems. Increased security for corporate network access can be provided by client connection through Checkpoint VPN. "The role played by Villa Moda in bringing the latest fashions from international fashion houses, as well as the particular attention paid to its customers, was our incentive to also provide the latest technological innovations," comments Sheikh Majed al-Sabah, president Villa Moda. "We are always keen to keep up with the best and most advanced technologies. This has led us to chose Al Alamiah Computer Systems to execute this project, in addition to its reputation as a pioneering Kuwaiti company, which adheres to international specifications and standards, and one which enjoys exceptional relationships with Intel and the other IT giants worldwide," he continues. "This step reinforces Villa Moda's position as the best commercial complex in the country, as it assimilates technologies of the modern era, serving its customers who wish to connect to the Internet, without the need for any kind of cabling whatsoever," Fahad Al Sharekh, director, business development, Al Alamiah Group, explains. "The first phase of the project secures connectivity at a speed of 256 kbits/s….the second phase will be studied with several other companies, in order to provide connectivity speeds reaching 2Mbits/s, and will benefit from the complex's strategic location with a view to covering wider neighboring areas, such as the 'future' freezone, as well as Kuwait University which will enable university students to make use of this achievement," says Al Sharekh. The number of hot spots is on the increase worldwide and, according to a study carried out by International Data Corporation (IDC), that number is expected to reach 118,000 points in 2005.||**||
