Editorial Leader|~||~||~|Use it or lose it

You may have noticed that for the past few week eCRN has carried a request to renew subscriptions for CRN—that is the monthly print magazine—not this email newsletter. Well, it seems that not enough of you have got online and done this. Just to reiterate, you must renew your details this month to continue getting CRN. The March 2002 issue should be on its way to subscribers now, but if you haven’t renewed your details yet, it is going to be the last copy you get. Unfortunately it is a requirement of our circulation audit company, who provide official independent figures on readership, that we update our data every three years; and with the high turnover of staff in the region, it makes sense to keep our records as up to date as possible. This means that the magazine goes straight to the people who want it, instead of getting lost in the internal mail or clogging up the in-trays of people that don’t want to read it. It shouldn’t be too much of an inconvenience, as it only takes a minute or two to refresh details, and we would really appreciate it if you as subscribers could take the time to do it.

Renew you CRN subscription now

Please note that CRN is currently in the process of updating its subscriptions list. If you wish to continue to recieve the magazine, you must renew subscription details at www.itp.net/renewal/crn/. You can also sign up for new subscriptions if you do not already get the magazine. We apologise for the inconvenience, but it is a requirement of BPA International, the company that audits CRN's circulation, that we carry out this work every three years.

||**||News|~||~||~|Intel unveils plans for next generation processors

In his industry presentation at IDF, Louis Burns of Intel's desktop platforms group shared company's vision for tomorrow's end users, particularly in the home network environment. The goal for computing and connectivity — namely anywhere, at any time, from any device — was reinforced by the unveiling of key plans for the next family of desktop and mobile processors.

Burns revealed the code name for the upcoming processor family, Prescott, and reported that this next generation processor will be based on NetBurst architecture.

It will also deliver to desktop PC users a processing system that utilizes hyperthreading, a technology previously unavailable in the desktop segment and by which an operating system is able to view a single processor as thought it were two, thus increasing platform performance.

Prescott's architecture will be based on 90 nanometre technology, and Intel claims that NetBurst has huge expandability potential. According to Burns, Prescott can be reasonably expected to reach 10GHz. Burns described a near future where consumer electronics and other devices will be linked with a PC using wireless networking and UpnP.

"Intel is driving a number of innovative technologies over the next year that will accelerate digital convergence in the home and continue to enhance our desktop platform capabilities, including high performance processors and revolutionary new form factors," Burns explained.

Anand Chandrasekher also made announcements regarding the future of processing. As vice president and general manager of Intel's mobile platforms group, he described the future of the mobile PC and urged industry to offer support to the mobility enabling program, by which Intel is striving to overcome the challenges facing mobile PC use.

Chandrasekher demonstrated the forthcoming Pentium 4 processor-M, featuring SpeedStep technology and "deep sleep" to reduce power consumption.

Looking ahead, Chandrasekher also spoke about the generation of mobile processors beyond, namely Banias processors.

The development of Banias will follow a bottom-up approach, incorporating features designed specifically to enhance the mobile computing experience. Based on a chipset code named Odem, Chandrasekher said Banias is expected to become available in the first half of 2003.

Compaq and Magirus extend partnership to Middle East

Compaq Middle East, in an attempt to add value to its range of services to the high-end enterprises in the region, has partnered with Magirus, its long-standing value-added distributor in Europe. A’Ayan Magirus, the regional arm of Magirus, has set up office at Dubai Internet City to distribute Compaq’s high-end systems in the UAE and Kuwait.

“We have enjoyed substantial growth in our enterprise business in the Middle East, and plan to aggressively build on this growth this year,” said Joseph Hanania, managing director, Compaq Middle East. Our partnership with Magirus will be an important factor in increasing our enterprise market strength, just as it has done in Europe.”

The two companies have shared a successful partnership in Europe since 1989. The extension of their partnership to the Gulf region is expected to generate new opportunities for Compaq, while facilitating the transferring of knowledge to its channel partners in the UAE and Kuwait. “The partnership has been developed to offer enhanced services to Compaq’s large enterprise customers,” explained Wolfgang Wittmer, enterprise business group manager, Compaq Business Development Group, EMEA. “Magirus will focus on selling Compaq’s high-end products, including Alpha servers running Unix, Proliant 4 to 8-way Intel Servers as well as the full range of Compaq storage solutions.” While Compaq will continue selling its products to retail and small-and-medium businesses, its new partner will focus only on high-end businesses. Through relationship management programmes, and logistical, technical and financial support, it will support Compaq and its first tier resellers.

Moreover, Magirus’ entry into the Middle East market is also expected to bring "significant financial support to the IT channel, a service currently unavailable in the region,” commented Abdulla Al-Mualifi, member of the board of Magirus, Middle East.

Intel CEO Barrett upbeat about PC industry

Intel CEO Craig Barrett, speaking during the chipmaker’s Developer Forum yesterday, believes that the worldwide PC market has begun to stabilise, while at the same time acknowledging that the world economy is in a deep recession.

“I can’t tell you when the recession will end, but I can tell you that the computer market has stabilised, albeit at a lower level than last year,” said Barrett. “You might expect the computer sector to recover faster than the communications sector.”

Barrett also suggested that the continuing growth of the Internet will also force businesses to upgrade their back-end systems more that they are doing presently.

“What our industry has in front of it is the build out of the Internet, and the convergence of communications and computing,” said Barrett. “The main challenge will be: how do we give the end user more reason to use our technology?”

Barrett went on to describe how Intel’s future will involve concentrating on making processors and other "building block components" for clients. Examples include PCs and handhelds, networking and telecommunications equipment and servers.

To complement its latest chips, Intel is expanding its effort to build software and testing labs in different parts of the world so that application developers and hardware manufacturers can tune their equipment for Intel chips.

Barrett again cited the economy as a serious obstacle to its progress, in addition to the slow adoption of broadband communication and security concerns.

Sun to charge for StarOffice 6.0

There have been reports that Sun Microsystems will begin charging Linux and Windows users for the next version of its StarOffice software. StarOffice 6.0, which is scheduled for release in May, is likely to have a price tag attached to it. Solaris versions of StarOffice, however, will continue to remain free.

Sun’s StarOffice software suite has posed a significant threat to Microsoft’s Office as its interface and use are similar to the latter, and it has been free to download, so far. Moreover, anti-Microsoft IT users and advocates of open-source advocates have used Star Office as a “free” weapon against “proprietary” Microsoft software.

Whether the new decision from Sun will alienate some of its open-source friends remains to be seen. Nevertheless, reports of an impending announcement from Sun, have already evoked many responses from the open-source community at Slashdot.org’s discussion site. One user says, “Amazon's current price for StarOffice 5.2 Deluxe is $37 and for what I get out of StarOffice that I downloaded from Sun $37, it is worth it. I'd even say $50 is fine. But if they intend to make this a $199 package, they're not going to get a second look from anyone in the Windows world. To pay half the price and get even 90% of the features and compatibility isn't going to sway the typical decision makers. To pay a tenth—now we're talking!”

The local office of Sun Microsystems, however, declined to comment further on the price issue, stating that “StarOffice would be free for download until further notice.”
