A council in Wales has awarded UK open source specialist Sirius Corporation the contract to centralize the e-mail usage of primary and secondary schools in its local area.

“The Open Source e-mail solution provided by Sirius Corporation was not only the most technically advanced but offered the lowest total-cost-of-ownership,” Giles Nunn, ISP officer at the Carmarthenshire County Council said.

Sirius will use a new open source system to provide a simple web-based interface to the area’s 15 secondary schools and 125 primary schools. The software will allow council administrators to monitor usage levels and block emails if necessary.

Sirius Corporation commented that the deal was a significant step forward in the adoption of open source software by local government.
