Editorial Leader|~||~||~|First up a correction:

Bahaa Salah, regional general manager of Aptec, Gulf, Levant & Africa, writes to me:

“I note that in your September article entitled ‘Middle East channel ponders HP/Compaq merger’, you have attributed a number of comments to myself which I do not believe are an accurate representation of what I said. I have not said that ‘HP’s PC business has not been as successful in the Middle East as it has in other parts of the world’. However, I did say that ‘Our Compaq PC revenue is greater than HP’s PC revenue for Aptec in the GCC countries and Levant (except Saudi)’.

“As far as re-branding of Compaq PCs, we believe that end users will continue to be satisfied if they realise that their chosen Compaq models will continue to be produced and supported (regardless of both brands). This we have been communicating to users through resellers. I have no doubt that HP with its vast resources both in the Middle East and worldwide will be able to support Compaq’s customers more than ever.”

My sincere apologies to Bahaa, and to Aptec for my mistake—sometimes it happens, and where we are at fault we will do our best to correct those mistakes as quickly as possible.

The Channel Forum Business Advantage

During 2001 the IT channel has felt increased pressure on margins, from the Internet, from increased direct selling by vendors and problems with grey marketing that make managing supply and demand a major battle. More complex solutions and an ongoing skills shortage have created a turbulent employment market. All these factors and many more besides mean that the business requirements placed upon the channel have changed, and to continue to build upon those successes of the last year, IT trade professionals need to have access to the latest information, and the ability and skills to transform that information into a working profit.

The Channel Forum, organised by ITP, the publishers of CRN, staged for the 6th time and sponsored by Intel and Tech Data, is the optimum platform for Channel personnel, IT professionals and major IT vendors to increase their knowledge, their education and their profits.

Created to complement and enhance the IT trade opportunities at Gitex, the Channel Forum is the largest dedicated channel event in the region, utilizing eleven purpose built seminar rooms to house lectures, workshops and conferences, and bring together IT trade professionals and vendors, both local and international, under one roof.

Among the companies that are hosting seminars at this year’s Gitex are Maxtor, Altitude, Network Associates, US Robotics, FVC, Paramount Computer Systems & Trend Micro, Tech Data, Avaya, Fujitsu & Forefront, IMAGiNET Software, Smartforce and Sony Professional Broadcast.

The Channel Forum is located in the foyer of Halls 1 & 2, housing the VIP lounge, an exclusive, business only retreat where professionals can take a break from the hectic Gitex schedule, network over refreshments or ponder the next seminar they will be attending.

Who should consider hosting presentations at The Channel Forum?

Anyone seeking new or additional Channel Partners throughout the Middle East. This includes any individuals whose products and services are represented at Gitex.

International IT vendors seeking to expand or strengthen channel ties through training and education programs.

Region learning the importance of data

Companies in the Middle East are beginning to appreciate the importance of their data, according to Thierry Louesse, regional general manager for EMC Middle East. Speaking at the opening of EMC’s new Dubai Internet City office, Louesse said that as companies focus more on the customer and on e-business, so enterprise storage requirements are growing in the region.

“Enterprise storage has become one of the fastest-growing sectors of the Middle East’s IT industry, as companies are becoming increasingly customer-focused and beginning to prepare for competition,” he said. “The growth of the Internet and e-mail communication has also caused data levels to explode, and now is the ideal time for EMC to increase its presence in the Middle East and meet increasing customer demand.”

The DIC office will serve as EMC’s regional headquarters, for supporting partners and customers, including Emirates Airlines, STC, Aramco, Batelco, Etisalat, Kuwait Finance House and Click Vodafone. It will also provide a base for technical staff, that are usually hosted in the region to help with specific customer projects, Louesse said. EMC would also be pushing ‘storage-on-demand’ through partners, whereby customers only pay for the storage they need, but are able to add storage at short notice to handle changing demands. STME recently rolled out an EMC storage-on-demand solution for Emirates Airlines.

In the wake of the recent attacks on the US, several companies in the region were also showing an interest in disaster recovery solutions, Louesse said. “Recent events just show us how important it is to get proper disaster recovery,” he said. “On top of all the other losses [from the attacks], it is estimated that 100,000 jobs may be lost because some companies lost all their data, they cannot operate without it.”

Sybase rolls out application integration for region

Sybase Middle East, is hailing the success of its New Era of Networks roadshow. The show visited venues in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Riyadh throughout September, and was intended to launch Sybase’ range of Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) solutions in the region.

The seminar was attended by a large number of top executives, managers, consultants as well as key decision makers representing various sectors, organisations and enterprises as the banking sector, oil & gas, government, and IT, as well as the private sector.

New Era of Networks, was recently acquired by Sybase, for $373 million, provides packaged EAI solutions designed to help companies quickly integrate their operational systems.

EAI solutions include process server, e-biz integrator, and pre-packed solutions adapters that are designed to work with specific off-the-shelf applications and standards to connect systems and software that were not originally designed to work with one another, and get them to communicate without costly and time-consuming re-keying or reprogramming. Sybase EAI also allows integration with Web-based applications as well, creating vital portals for customers, suppliers, and partners.

“We are very pleased to launch the New Era of Networks (Enterprise Application Integration) Solutions product line in the Middle East, that will complement our Sybase e-business solutions and build on Sybase’s strength as a global supplier of software solutions for all enterprises,” said George Khouri, managing director of Sybase Middle East. “It will definitely guarantee the maximum return on investment (ROI) pursued by our valuable customers with less effort, time and cost.”

Aptec-Acer channel alliance increases market share

Aptec and Acer are bullish about their prospects after a period of expanding market-share and pushing Acer products. The relationship between vendor and distributor is a longstanding one but Acer’s decision to split its computer and peripherals business has leant it more focus, according to Sukant Mishra, product manager (components) of Aptec UAE.

Manesh Bakshi, business development manager at Acer Multimedia and Communications MEA, said: “Our status as preferred vendor of peripherals and multimedia products in the regional market is a result of a carefully adopted channel management startegy. Aptec UAE has played a critical role in drastically enhancing the market share of our display products.”

Bakshi added that the nature of Acer’s products being at a good point in the market balanced between quality and price, helped them target a wide market. To further enhance the company’s position, Acer is planning a reseller incentive program for the fourth quarter.

Mishra said: “Aptec’s strength of a strong channel network in the region integrated with a focused strategy is helping us improve our market share in Acer products.” He added that Aptec had “aggressively promoted” Acer in the Middle East and Africa and that this had helped Aptec become one of the largest distributors of CRT monitors in the region.

Microsoft launches Windows XP Promotion

Microsoft has begun its promotional activities for Windows XP in the region. To build expectation ahead of the October 25 launch date, the company has set up a competition website, with copies of Windows XP as prizes.

Mazen Shehadeh, product marketing manager, Windows XP, at Microsoft Gulf & Eastern Mediterranean (GEM), said that the launch of Windows XP had already generated a high level of interest in the region.

“Because of its significant regional reach, we opted for the Internet as our promotional medium for this campaign. All participants need to do is log on to our website and answer one simple question on Windows XP. Answers can also be found through links on the same site.”

The site, www.microsoft.com/middleeast/windowsxp, will give away three copies of Windows XP home edition, each week, until October 25. The competition is open to all residents of UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Lebanon, Jordan, Cyprus and Malta. Entrants simply have to answer a question about Windows XP on the website, with those that answer correctly going into the prize draw.

AMD sheds jobs, closes manufacturing plants

Declining demand for microprocessors is causing chip manufacturer AMD to cut 2300 jobs, about 15% of its work force. The company will also close two of its chip making plants.

The move is being made to cut costs, according to a statement released by the company. Around 1000 employees will be made redundant in Texas, due to the closure of the factories. The other redundancies will come from restructuring of operation in Penang, Malaysia.

The move will cost the company between $80 and $110 million, although AMD hopes to save $125 million per year thereafter. The redundancies will be completed by the end of Q2 2002.

The FABs that are being closed, FABs 14 and 15, are AMDs oldest FABs, and are no longer involved in processor or flash-memory manufacturing.

“These actions will allow us to reduce costs without impairing our new product development activities in pursuit of long-term growth opportunities. We will focus our organisation around our two most promising opportunities—flash memory devices and PC processors,” said WJ Sanders III, chairman and chief executive officer. “We will treat all employees affected by these actions with fairness and respect, consistent with our values and our commitment to our people.”
