Editorial Leader|~||~||~|Dear colleague,

Both Intel and Apple returned their quarterly results last week, and as was expected, they were not exactly encouraging. Intel’s profits for the second quarter were down 76% on the same period last year. Apple dropped 70% at the same time. AMD have also reported disappointing margins, down 11%, despite record unit sales.

Morgan Stanley’s Channel Tracker Survey for the last quarter also reveal a depressing outlook for the US and European channel in the coming months. Sales of Apple, IBM, HP and Compaq desktops are down for almost half of all resellers. Forty percent of all resellers expect sales of PCs to drop by more than one fifth in the third quarter.

In this region, a few more quiet lay-offs have added to pile, a few more complaints have been heard about the costs of business, budgets being cut. If we wanted to talk ourselves into a recession, we are certainly going the right way about it.

But amongst all the gloomy forecasts from the analysts and the experts, comes some altogether more interesting, and for the market, more worrying commentary.

Alan Oscroft, with the MotleyFool.co.uk, suggested a more fundamental reason for declining PC sales, not one you hear often, at least not spoken out loud, by any one in the market. Remember that the Motley Fool is the investment advice Web site that aims to bring commonsense to the financial markets, cutting through the doublespeak etc.

Oscroft suggested that the latest lull was not just due to a general economic slowdown, that was pushing things like new PCs for the company directors off of the shopping list. Nor is the overcapacity in the chip market leaving Intel and others with empty pockets, regardless of just how many times chip manufacturers cut prices.
His opinion was, that in terms of PC sales, this was the big one—we just don’t need those high-end desk tops any more.

The real killer for Apple et al has been the decline in top-end sales. Of course, as belts tighten, the first thing to go is that hard-to-justify-to-the-accountant top of the range PC. We are also at a transitional point, at least with Intel processors, so you might expect slower sales at the top end. But Oscroft sees something more severe. He thinks that we just don’t need that much computing power anymore. PCs have just outgrown the users.

It is easy to see his argument. For years, PCs have been obsolete almost as soon as you get them out of the showroom. Something, bigger, better and faster has come along almost immediately. Intel report a 76% drop in profits in the same month that they release a 1.8GHz processor—CPU speeds have almost doubled in 18 months. Hard drive manufacturers are touting drives of 80GB, with 20GB being touted as standard. And we don’t need this much power yet. As Oscroft says “Some day we’d reach a point where that two-year old computer could run this year’s software just fine. A plateau in computer sales would be reached.”

Could we have reached the top?

I'd also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Michelle Sturman - Michelle is starting on another project for ITP very shortly, after three whole years of CRN. I'd like to thank her for helping me take up the reins from Colin Browne and for all her hard work over thirty six issues of the magazine, and wish her every success with the venture. So thanks Michelle and good luck!

||**||News|~||~||~|HP reinforces services capability with Comdisco buyout

After failing in its bid to acquire PricewaterhouseCoopers at the end of last year, Carly Fiorina, HP’s CEO is making a second attempt to beef up the vendor’s services business.

In a deal worth approximately $610 million, Fiorina agreed to buy the computer services division of Comdisco. Executives from Comdisco simultaneously filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as HP announced its plans.

Assuming that the deal comes off successfully, HP will get its hands on Comdisco’s 1,300-strong system support business, currently run by John Jackson. Jackson is expected to continue in his role, when the group is run from HP’s headquarters.

The deal comes at a time when market analysts are predicting that the services business should remain largely untouched by widely expected downturn in IT spending.

Even after the proposed $18 billion merger with PwC fell through it was likely HP would make another attempt to build up its services business. With the margins tightening on hardware sales, big iron vendors are expected to focus on services to make up as much as 70-to-80% of deals in the future.

Only earlier this week Sun announced a deal with EDS for a ‘continuum of services.’ The deal should enable Sun and EDS to jointly offer customers a range of ‘on-demand’ IT services.

However, as with the HP/Comdisco deal, it isn’t clear what the specific local implications of the agreement are likely to be.

Atheer and Intershop joint venture

Atheer, the joint venture between Bahrain telecommunications company Batelco and the Jeraisy Group in Saudi Arabia, is partnering with Intershop, provider of e-business software. The partnership will provide Atheer with Intershop’s technology platform and e-business expertise to support the e-commerce initiatives for the Kingdom’s business community.

In the first phase of the alliance, Atheer is to create a hosting platform for e-business storefronts, followed by the creation of a horizontal business-to-business marketplace for organisations in Saudi to trade goods and services online.

“Atheer brings together cumulative expertise from both the GCC’s telecommunications industry and Saudi Arabia’s trading community,” said Rashid Al-Snan, executive director of Atheer. “With this background, our partnership with Intershop will enable Atheer to create viable and sustainable e-business models for the Kingdom, and eventually, for the rest of the Middle East,” he added.

Along with supplying Atheer with its technology platform, Intershop will also support Atheer in the implementation, integration, project management, and training for Atheer’s e-business initiatives in Saudi Arabia.

Relisys wants you

Relisys, a division of Teco is looking to increase its distribution power across the Middle East in a bid to create brand awareness amongst end-users.

Relisys signs exclusive distribution agreements with its partners, in order to control the market price and margin, but also expects the partner to become a Relisys service centre into the bargain. “We want to have exclusive distributors in each market as they have to be reliable and prepared to promote our brand,” says Maria Lin, channel manager, Relisys MEASA.

In addition to its CRT monitors, Relisys has recently expanded its product portfolio to include Plasma screens and CD-ROMs, with support arriving in the form of a local representative once partners for each market have been found. “A good distribution network is what we are trying to do at the moment,” says Dave Stevinson, director, sales and marketing, Relisys.
