Editorial Leader|~||~||~|Dear Colleague,

Microsoft is taking steps to address some of the problems that were ruled against it in the anti-trust case. Although Redmond is off the hook as regards a compulsory break up, the software giant seems to be taking steps to remedy some of the points that were upheld in the case, or making some superficial steps to clean up its image ahead of the inevitable horse trading that will be precede the settlement of the case with the Department of Justice, as some have suggested.

The forthcoming Windows XP is the main focus of the change, which mainly involves allowing OEMs to remove the icons for Internet Explorer and configure other elements of the operating system before they are installed, and to allow users the same flexibility to remove the proprietary browser. While tying Internet Explorer into Windows was one of the biggest complaints against Redmond, the steps to remove it are not particularly helpful – as Bob Lande, anti-trust professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law commented: “That war is over. What do any of these concessions mean when Netscape is on life support?”

It is also difficult to see how Microsoft can completely extract the browser, when so much of Microsoft’s strategy relies on linking different elements of other applications to the browser. It seems that Microsoft will handle this by having IE still lurking in the OS somewhere. Smart tags are also out of Windows XP, because of fears that tying specific web content, namely MSN or other Microsoft-approved sites to the OS would cause more issues with a hyper sensitive public.

Also missing from Windows XP will be support for ripping MP3s, and DVD playback. Both will be available for download from Microsoft, at an extra cost, but won’t be included in the OS, again, because of concerns over anti-trust. While there is no dominant standard for these applications yet, keeping a level playing field may be a fair-handed move by Microsoft, but Microsoft seems to have missed the point – it is not that people don’t want applications – they want to be able to choose not to use Microsoft.

By not including functionality, Microsoft really will encourage people to shop elsewhere. The steps that Microsoft has taken seem to be little more than a nod to the DoJ, but by fudging the issue, picking out key parts of planned functions and removing popular consumer elements, Microsoft seems to have an operating system created as much by lawyers and spin doctors as by software engineers.
||**||News|~||~||~|Microsoft product activation exposed

Microsoft's new product activation process has been the focus of intense scrutiny and speculation in recent months. Determined to stamp out piracy at almost any cost, the vendor has resisted all appeals to describe exactly how the process works, which has done nothing to allay the fears of observers that registration will result in data being sent back to the software giant.

This speculation may be over, with the announcement from a German company that claims to have reverse engineered the process used by Windows XP (RC1), showing what data is gathered, how it is encrypted and stored, and exactly what configuration changes will result in mandatory re-registration.

The reverse engineering and disclosure was done by Fully Licensed, a startup German company specialising in online licensing and distribution.

"We contribute technical facts to a discussion that is currently characterized by uncertainty and speculation about XP revealing details of a user's hardware configuration, the installed software, or even personal data during the activation procedure." says Thomas Lopatic, managing director and CTO of Fully Licensed.

Lopatic says that the reverse engineering showed that Microsoft in fact gathers no more than insensitive hardware data and the serial number of the product.

After some number-crunching on the serial number, the product activation creates a database containing information about several hardware components, including: the primary volume serial number, NIC MAC address, CPU serial number, RAM size and several hardware identifiers: CD-ROM, graphics card, hard drive, SCSI host adapter, and IDE controller. There is also a check to see whether or not the machine is dockable (a notebook) or not.

This data is written as a snapshot against which ongoing configuration changes are compared. If four or more items have changed, then a re-registration is required. If the dockable option is set, then the SCSI host adapter, graphics card and IDE adapter are excluded from the comparison.

While this data could still be of demographic use to Microsoft, it is far from the Orwellian extremes some pundits had expected, raising the question of why Microsoft was so coy about the procedure.

"Since our analysis proves that the transmitted information is completely innocuous, we are surprised that Microsoft has been that vague about the inner workings of WPA [Windows Product Activation] for all these months." says Matthias Kunze, managing director and CFO of Fully Licensed. "Software piracy is still a major problem for all software companies. And we think that their interest in raising the bar for software pirates is absolutely justified." he adds.

In addition to technical documentation describing their results, Fully Licensed released source code and tools which are able to examine keys, hashes and the database storing the hardware information. While this may change in the final release of Windows XP, the groundwork has been laid for future reverse engineering, and probably for piracy methods using this as a starting point.

Microsoft was not immediately available for comment, but watch this space for more developments.

ITS to implement and resell Oracle CRM

International Turnkey Systems (ITS) is to implement and resell Oracle’s customer relationship management (CRM) solution. The banking and telcos system integrator will rollout the CRM system across its eleven Middle Eastern offices, its regional call centres, and through its Internet services portal.

A desire to stay ahead of its competitors, and the growing need for a fully integrated solution, was at the heart of ITS’s decision to employ a CRM solution and the company hopes to benefit in a number of ways.

"Oracle's Sales Automation will enable us to achieve critical goals, including selling collaboratively across geographies and sales teams, creating a single customer database across the enterprise, and providing superior after-sales service and support," says Mohammed Zaki, Senior Manager, Marketing, ITS.

Once the solution is in place, customers will be able to register problems with regional offices either online or by telephone. “The implementation of Oracle CRM will give ITS' Enterprise Services a more unified and better informed customer methodology, which ultimately leads to improved service and competitive advantage, says Samiullah Khawaja, assistant general manager for customer services, ITS.

Whilst gearing up for instillation, ITS is also ramping up its sales and services operations in order to start selling and providing implementation services to customers interested in Oracle CRM in the region.

"We are delighted to have ITS provide implementation services to our CRM customers in the region, this is one of the fastest growing segments," says Arun Khehar, Oracle Middle East CRM director.

"Our customers are looking for capable organisations to help them with their CRM implementations, I have no doubt that ITS will deliver quality and timely implementation services as it has done with other complex products in the past," he adds.

Khaled Faraj Al-Saeid, general manage, ITS, believes that there is already great demand for CRM from the telcos and banking sectors. The early adopters, he predicts, will be those companies that readily embraced ERP when it first hit the market.

This CRM project builds on the existing relationship between the two organisations. "The strategic relationship we have with Oracle has been further strengthened through this CRM initiative, especially in light of our work with Oracle to take the CRM and E-Business Suite to market with value addition and knowledgebase that we have built over the years in the banking and telecommunications industries," notes ITS' Imdad Ali Abdulrazak, product manager for enterprise CRM solutions.

Kuwaiti businesses ready for IP Telephony

Universe Computers of Kuwait has been certified as a Cisco partner for IP telephony, to provide combined voice/data communications networks.

The company is the first in Kuwait to be awarded the Cisco IP Telephony Specialisation which covers design, installation, support and sales for networks using IP telephony.

“When Cisco introduced its new generation of IP telephony technology in this region, Universe Computers conducted a feasibility study in the Kuwait market to establish the suitability and value of this technology to the major organisations here,” said Saleh Marafi, director of Universe Computers."

"Our findings were that not only was the market ready for IP telephony, there was a pressing need amongst certain organisations to implement it as soon as possible, especially among organisations with large number of customers, such as the financial services sector. Clearly, the vital step for Universe Computers was to develop our expertise to a level that would allow us to confidently design and implement IP telephony solutions.”

Universe will also work with Cisco to deploy other solutions based on open standard IP telephony, such as customer centric e-commerce solutions.

MMI partners with PWC

MMI Logistics has teamed up with the Public Warehousing Company (PWC) to enhance third party supply chain management services between Dubai and Kuwait.

The partnership will provide companies with information and solutions aimed at improving distribution across the Middle East region.

“Effective supply chain management is essential to ensure the increasing Middle Eastern market demands are met. This partnership will enable MMI and PWC to offer information flow on product movement giving a competitive edge to our customers,” said Mike Lee, manager, MMI Logistics.

“Businesses wanting to broaden their opportunities across the Middle East and the worldwide market will benefit from this innovative partnership sharing common technology and facility infrastructure through a combination of the concentrated investment and local market knowledge,” commented Ali Mikail, manager of business development, PWC.”

More lunch boxes, more laptops

IBM, Dubai’s Higher Colleges of Technology and Al Futtaim Computer Software Products Company (Afcomp) have formed an alliance to deliver IT to UAE national students.

The alliance will deliver e-learning solutions and provide IBM ThinkPad notebooks, and the recently unveiled Transnote personal computers, to the students of the Higher Colleges of Technology.

Like www.sheikhmohammed.co.ae’s planned online education sector marketplace, this initiative is not, supposedly, about selling technology kit but rather about introducing the regions school children to the wonders of IT.

“We are proud to have Afcomp provide us with IBM products, in our colleges. [Both companies] have been great supporters in our constant endeavor to provide our students with the best in technology,” says Dr.Tayeb Kamali, director of Abu Dhabi men’s college.

“Afcomp has been an IT Solution provider for the last 12 years and is committed to supporting the UAE efforts to gain and retain a competitive edge in the IT field in the Middle East. This initiative with HCT, along with IBM, is a definite step in that direction,” added Wassim Henoud, managing director, Afcomp.
