Editorial Leader|~||~||~|Dear Colleague,

The Dubai World Trade Centre has announced that it is to launch Gitex Saudi Arabia in Riyadh next year. DWTC, in partnership with Riyadh Exhibitions Co, will present both Gitex and Computer Shopper at the end of April 2002. DWTC says that it wants to expand its brand name across the Middle East, and to take the leading global and regional players to Saudi. Admirable aims, but is Gitex Riyadh an exhibition too far?

With Gitex Beirut, Cairo, and Dubai in existence, and a show planned for Hyderabad, just how many more shows can the region support – or the industry stand?

I have no doubt that Gitex Riyadh will be a success. The Saudi Arabian market is huge, and the e-business conference that the show is nominally tied into was a major success earlier this year. Taking Gitex direct to the market makes perfect sense, and should provide opportunities for companies to break into the Kingdom, but is there enough business in the region to absorb more Gitex?

The Saudi show is positioned six months apart from Dubai – meaning it will be possible for companies to do both. Any company with aspirations to be a GCC-operator will have to do both, but given the expense of exhibiting at a show, how many will really be able to afford it? Can staff manage another major IT exhibition in the year?

Where will the smaller companies from outside of the Middle East chose to exhibit – Dubai, Saudi, both?

Of course, for many businesses it won’t be necessary to attend both shows, saving travel for those in the Kingdom. But if companies cut down their presence, will it have a negative impact on both shows? Of course Gitex Dubai could stand to be smaller – eight or nine halls is too many to absorb, even over one week.

Last year’s Gitex Dubai benefited greatly from spinning off Computer Shopper to a separate event – the right guests were present at the right shows, but the biggest benefit of this was that exhibitors actually had the time to speak to genuine business opportunities.

Which is what Gitex is all about – business and information. The IT community comes together to strike deals, and to find out about opportunities for new business. If Riyadh and Dubai split, how will the markets exchange the ideas and information that make this happen?
||**||News|~||~||~|CA and Wipro target Middle East together

Indian IT software and services company, Wipro Infotech, has inked a deal with the regional arm of Computer Associates to target the region’s enterprise market. Through the alliance, CA-ME will continue to provide e-business infrastructure whilst Wipro will supply project management and implementation services.

Through the alliance, CA-ME expects to reduce implementation times by between 30 and 40%, therefore delivering a much faster return on investment (ROI) for customers.

“Computer Associates and Wipro Infotech complement one another exceptionally well. CA is the world’s leader in e-business management software solutions; Wipro, has considerable experience in managing large projects worldwide and is a leader in enterprise software solutions implementation,” says Abdul Aziz Al-Salloum, managing director of CA-ME.

“Together, we are able to provide the Middle East market with seamless solutions from the combined, globally-experienced project management teams. This will definitely increase the return on investment made by Middle East customers and bring discipline to big project implementations,” adds Al-Salloum.

“What Wipro brings to the Computer Associates alliance is the ability to provide the region’s customers, even SME’s [small and medium sized enterprises], with complete ‘turn-key’ IT solutions. The CA partnership will also give us access to some of the largest, most prominent enterprises in the region, where CA technology has already been implemented – which is key for any new market entrant,” comments Suresh Vaswani, president, Wipro Infotech.

Under the terms of the agreement, the two firms have established a unified sales and technical team responsible for new business throughout the Middle East.

Intel appoints Aptec as authorised distributor for Egypt

Intel has appointed Aptec as an authorised distributor for Egypt. Aptec will distribute the complete Intel range in the country, including processors, motherboards and networking components. Aptec is already established as a distributor in the area, but this agreement will allow the company to leverage its ‘focussed distribution’ model to the local assembler market in particular.

The Egyptian PC market is growing rapidly, with shipments expected to reach 200,000 by the end of this year. Well over 50% of these PCs will come from the local assembler market, boosting the demand for components especially. A number of initiatives from the Egyptian government are expected to further grow the local assembly market by some 100,000 units over the next year and a half.

“Our partnership with Intel is very timely and strategic. Having seen the take off of our OEM and Components Divisions across the region, Intel products add an important component to our offerings. Intel will also add strategic products to our networking and Value Added product range.” said Ali Bagdhadi, Aptec’s chief executive officer.

“We are delighted to appoint Aptec as our distributor for Intel in Egypt.” Said Gilbert Lacroix, Intel's general manager for the Middle East and Africa. “This has been a long overdue partnership and we are delighted to conclude this distribution agreement with a world class partner.”

LG Electronics Middle East business partner service site a success

LG Electronics Middle East (LGEME) is reporting the success of its business website, since its launch eight months ago. The Jebel Ali-based service subsidiary is reporting major business gains as customers adopt B2B through its online service, www.lgesvc.co.ae. By May of this year, the company had gone from 0 to 94% of all orders from business partners placed online.

“There is no doubt that this service web site has been a run-away success,” said YR Roh, managing director of LGEME. “We continuously strive to provide customers with the best digital service and aim to be the region’s leading service company.”

The B2B site is serving customers from business accounts as far away as Abidjan and Togo, with a monthly average this year of 66% of all of LGE ME’s orders being placed online. Customers have been logging on to place orders, check parts stock, make pricing enquiries, download service manuals or shipping documents or get product and order bulletins.

“Last year it used to take eleven days to process an order and receive payment confirmation-the on-line service has now reduced this to just one hour during a normal business day,” said Roh. “The research clearly shows the site is firmly established as the New Economy way ahead for our customers.”

“In the near future all LGEME staff will communicate with customers only via the Internet,” explained Roh. “This will enable them to supply exact information and will eliminate the risk of any communications uncertainty that exists in an environment based on paper orders and letters.

“In addition, our B2B site will shortly host a Technical Forum where technicians can exchange views and experience which will help raise the overall level of technical expertise in the region,” he said.

Extreme teams with TNC

Extreme Networks has appointed The Network Center (TNC) as its training provider for the Middle East, Africa and Subcontinent. Extreme’s decision to appoint a training partner in the region was driven by the need for high-end network training, and improved business in the region.

The training will involve two courses dealing with configurations and applications of the Extreme range of switch products. The first course will involve instructor-led activities, lectures and lab exercises, with a focus on product architecture and software. While the second instructor-led course will highlight the concepts and commands for LAN routers, and Layer 3 configuration for IP using static routes, RIP and OSPF.

The courses will begin this month and run through until December, running two or three times a month.

“With the governmental contracts we’ve won in the Middle East recently there is an immediate demand for education at network specialist level, which we fell TNC provides,” explained Emad Makiya, Extreme Networks, country manager, ME.

“We firmly believe in the future of broadband, and as networking technologies evolve, the demand for highly trained networking professionals increases daily,” said Lisa Rutherford, general manager, TNC. “Our role is to train those who deploy and manage Extreme Networks products in every networking environment.”

Spot the birdie

The ongoing debate about mobile phone safety has put many families off the idea of living near GSM transmission towers, with concerns about radiation risks preying on the minds of parents.

However, one family in Jordan has decided that the risks involved are worth taking, in return for a nice view and good security, and made their home half way up a transmitter.

The squatters, a family of eagles including two newborn chicks, were discovered by MobileCom engineers carrying out scheduled maintenance on a solar-powered GSM tower, situated on a cliff top in the middle of the desert.

“We were completely caught by surprise when we found the nest perched on the tower with the eagles in it,” said Mohammed Salem, one of the engineers who found the unusual tenants.

“Our ultimate objective was to carry out the scheduled maintenance of the solar system without disturbing the nest. In fear that the parent eagles would abandon the newborns, we were careful enough not to disturb the nest and the parent eagles flew back to protect it once we were done.”

The eagles are believed to have chosen their nesting site because it was inaccessible to predators.

“Animals in general are able to sense danger caused by nature or humans and are less likely to nest in an area that poses a threat to them or their newborns,” said Stephane Boudier, chief operations officer at MobileCom.

“MobileCom’s towers do not impact the environment as they are installed specifically to meet high European standards. For wider coverage in remote areas, the towers are higher and so the eagles appear to have found this high structure is just what they wanted to shelter their young!”

The site with the eagle nest will not be visited for some time until the next scheduled maintenance visit to ensure that the surviving eagle will enjoy healthy growth without disruption. In the meantime, MobileCom will continue its efforts to ensure that the new habitat is protected.

“The eagles have become something of a mascot to our staff in the technical department,” said Salem.
