Editorial Leader|~||~||~|Dear Colleague,

More than a few red-faces this month, as virus warnings concerning the sulfnbk.exe virus flooded inboxes around the globe. Of course (ahem), it wasn’t a virus, but rather a hoax with a twist – anyone who was taken in by the message and followed the instructions to locate and remove the ‘virus’ from their systems actually deleted part of Windows operating system. A hoax with a destructive payload. “Cute” was the description from one observer.
Thankfully the virus had been spotted for what it was some time ago, so the message went round quickly enough just to ignore the message, but not before the Gulf News had reported the virus as genuine. Deleting the sulfnbk.exe file also has no real effect as it is only included in Windows to allow a user to revert to Windows 95 after installing Windows 98. (Why is that particular system utility still lurking in Windows 2000 and ME?)
What the virus did do though, is highlight two things. First, just how conscious of the threat of viruses the general public has become, and secondly, just how little the average user understands about viruses – their delivery, destructive potential, or how to tell real from fake. Viruses are now headline news, but some people seem to see the word ‘virus’ in an email and immediately are overcome with an urge to rush outside shouting: “The sky is falling!” Others still don’t get the message not to open attachments, particularly .vbs. It is not surprising that many corporations prefer to take control of email away from the desktop.
So what should the IT industry be doing? Obviously there is an opportunity to sell more anti-virus software and other security solutions. But just shifting boxes is not the answer. More sophisticated anti-virus software is all well and good, but the security chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and without being properly informed, the weakest link is always going to be the end user. More responsibility is being placed at the mail server, but this couldn’t stop the sulfbnk hoax. Perhaps the only answer is to ban end-users from using email altogether.

Yours as ever,

Mark Sutton

The Saudi Arabian Supreme Economic Council has announced that it will cut duties on all imported goods from 12% to 5%. An official statement said that the move is intended to strengthen the competitiveness of the Saudi economy. Many market analysts are suggesting that the move will improve trade and will also help comabt the problem of customs fraud.

Planetarabia and Alibaba.com unveil B2B portal

Planetarabia has partnered with Alibaba.com to launch a business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce portal.

Aimed at the small-to-medium sized market, the portal will give businesses the opportunity to find trade leads both within the region and globally. By transacting online buyers and sellers will be able to accelerate trade and reduce costs.

According to Planetarabia co-founder and CEO, Imad Benharouga, “B2B has tremendous potential in the Arab world when it comes to SME’s [because] Arab businesses will be able to find new markets and trade with businesses beyond their geographical territories.”

By partnering with Alibaba.com, Planetaribia and its users can log into an established network that links over 600,000 buyers and sellers from around 200 countries. Trading in products and services ranging from Vietnamese seagrass slippers to mining and metallurgy projects, the site covers a number of vertical industries.

“The Arab community is already one of our most loyal membership bases and our partnership with Planetarabia will help us strengthen our services for businesses in the Middle East,” said Jack Ma, Alibaba CEO.

In addition to trading online, companies new to the Web can use the portal to produce their own trade site by using pre-designed templates and user-friendly site management tools. Such features are “testament to our focus and dedication to offering value-enhanced services to the MENA region,” concluded Benharouga.

MENA Report launched by Al Bawaba

Al Bawaba.com, the Jordan based Arabic/English news portal, has unveiled its stand-alone Internet site MenaReport.com. The new site delivers business and financial news on the Middle East and North Africa region.

Mena Report is the latest regional business and finance portal. Menafn.com and Zawya.com have similar offerings, each with different revenue modules. “Our strength is analysis and research and how we present information. The new site is a showcase of Al Bawaba’s technological and financial strength,” Hani Jabsheh, director and founder of Al Bawaba, told ITP.net. “We provide continuous coverage by working with specialised entities like UFICO in Jordan and Prime Securities in Egypt.”

Al Bawaba, which is emerging after 4 months of restructuring its business, built Mena Report in less than a month. It hopes to set a new standard as far as business information and delivery of content is concerned. Mena Report’s content is derived from Al Bawaba’s site, its own editors in addition to freelance writers, and wire feeds from Reuters.

“The Middle East and North Africa region represents an immense opportunity for business growth,” said Jurgen Leschke of TFG venture capital, one of the backers of Al Bawaba and Mena Report. “Access to sound market information allows business opportunities to be identified, and thus the formation and success of new ventures. MENA Report will be a vital resource both for businesses to expand into the Middle East and for home-grown initiatives.” Visitors to the site will be able to obtain market data and financials by accessing Mena Report’s online database.

Al Bawaba, which is backed by New York-based venture capitalist THCG, as well as by TFG and Middle East Internet Holdings, says it is trying to raise additional capital. This funding will be pumped into expanding Al Bawaba’s sales and marketing efforts in the GCC and Egypt, according to Jabsheh.

STME expands operations into Pakistan

STME has branched out into provision of enterprise storage to the Asian sub-continent, with the launch of operations in Pakistan. The company will work through partners Mushko Electronics and Unisys Pakistan to push storage solutions into the developing Pakistani market.

“Now that STME has achieved critical market share throughout the Middle East, Pakistan represents an ideal expansion opportunity based on its relative lack of existing storage infrastructure. Organizations in Pakistan have expressed considerable enthusiasm for deploying the latest technology to protect and manage their vital data assets, and STME is investing in the country to meet that growing demand,” stated STME’s General Manager, Trevor Hutson.

STME’s partners in the region provide access to markets and to infrastructure. Mushko electronics has service centres and offices in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, Pakistan’s primary cities, and Unisys Pakistan has a wide customer base throughout financial institutions, ISPs, educational facilities and government organisations across the country.

“STME’s Middle East operations reported a 70 percent revenue growth in the year 2000, and we anticipate that storage investment in that region will triple in 2001. Because Pakistan is such an untapped market in terms of enterprise storage adoption, STME forecasts that storage investment in that country will more than double within our first twelve months of operation there,” added Andrew Calthorpe, STME’s Sales Director.

Among the technologies that STME will introduce to the Pakistani market are the best-of-breed solutions from its partners Computer Networking Technology (CNT), EMC Corporation, StorageTek Corporation, VERITAS Software Corporation, and Emulex Corporation. STME will also invest in training and support facilities in Pakistan to develop the same reputation for superlative after-sales services that it enjoys throughout the Middle East.

Computer Associates hits the road

Computer Associates Middle East (CA-ME) is building storage awareness in the region with a series of roadshows highlighting storage management for e-business from June 2nd to 14th.

The roadshows will include technology updates, and advice on storage solutions. Computer Associates will also take the opportunity to showcase future product lines, such as an Open Systems Management Framework for enterprise storage area network management.

“The amount of data stored on distributed servers is increasing constantly, while backup windows continue to shrink. Storage management, security of data, and disaster recovery have become very high priorities in the Middle East,” said Abdul Karim Riyaz, regional marketing manager, Computer Associates, Middle East.

“As e-business and Internet adoption increase in the Middle East, and as organisations become more competitive, enterprise storage is now one of the most critical business issues in the region today. CA-ME is conducting this road show initiative to increase the level of regional awareness about the necessity for a long-term storage and disaster recovery strategy and its benefits,” explained Riyaz.

The roadshow will stop in Jeddah (2nd), Riyadh (3rd), Khobar (4th), Manama (5th), Abu Dhabi (6th), Dubai (10th), Muscat (11th), Doha (12th), Kuwait City (13th), and Beirut (14th). Elite sees systems management booms

Enterprise systems management is starting to boom in Saudi Arabia if the experience of Elite Computer Solutions is anything to go by. The company has seen turnover grow to SR 22 million in 2000 from SR 4.9 million in 1998, its first year of operation. Turnover of SR 45 million is being targeted for 2001.

What Elite provides is software that allows companies to get better control over their IT systems, so that they can reduce system downtime. This is a task that’s becoming all the more difficult as companies grow and IT systems become more complex, according to Musa Eid, Elite’s sales & business development manager.

“As organisations get bigger, the challenge is to maintain a level of service,” says Eid. “People expect a solution to problems in no time.”

The more competitive nature of business and the arrival of the Internet are also changing the rules. A few years back, Eid says, a few hours of IT downtime might have been manageable. Not so now. “A few minutes of downtime means dollars lost,” says Eid.

Elite represents a number of international systems and security management brands, including BMC Software, Internet Security Systems (ISS), Peregrine and Baltimore. Each brand is considered to be ‘best of breed’ in its particular field, such as Peregrine for infrastructure resource management and ISS for security management.

The company’s approach to the market is to hold workshops with customers at which their needs are defined. An appropriate solution can then be put together from the vendors that Elite represents. Eid says that Elite has invested significantly in the skills of its product implementation team and adds that end user training is an integral part of the Elite service.

The company’s latest initiative is the development of a helpdesk service, which will aim to provide clients with instant resolution of common problems. Service level agreements providing minimum guaranteed response times and problem solution times are likely to be part of the offering. An October launch is expected.

Systems management was long considered a luxury by IT departments, which were spending merely to build up infrastructure. Now that many application and platform decisions have been made, companies are looking more and more at how to manage and optimise those systems. This is where Elite comes in.

“Systems management used to be an optional sort of solution,” says Eid. “But now companies are relying on their applications and systems more and more.” A customer list that includes half a dozen major KSA banks, SCECO and Aramco is evidence of that.

Mindware opens office in Beirut

Following the lead of major vendors, and building on its joint venture with Aramex, Mindware has opened a local office in Lebanon.

The decision of the Lebanese government to waver custom duties was also a factor in the opening of a local office, as goods clear straightaway now, says Tim Martin, managing director of Mindware.

“The opening of a regional office in Lebanon is important to Mindware as we have recognised the growing opportunities in the region and need to be in a position to support the Lebanese IT channel,” says Martin.

Support for local resellers is readily available, with five full time members of staff, with plans to double the team by the end of the year. “We have made substantial investment in the region and are now in a position to offer the channel local stock and a local interface,” says Martin.
