An ace up his sleeve

MEX spoke to Eric Tien, managing director of Acer Computer (ME), to see just how this company expects to complete such a feat.

Introduction|~||~||~|Briefly describe what Acer does?

Acer was established in 1976 and has grown since then to enjoy the title of worldwide leading PC manufacturer. As one of the world's largest manufacturers of computers, Acer has been taking the lead in bridging the technology gap between PC's and notebook computers.
At Acer we have made it our business to offer a broad range of PC products you name it, we can do it, from high end PC Servers for industry leaders to multimedia desktop computers, notebooks, computer peripherals and components. We are also the leading Internet enabler, offering Internet component technologies, devices and basic Internet services. Among these are the end-to-end solutions, mobile phones, plasma displays, TFT screens, projectors, wireless communications and E-corporate solutions.

At Acer we employ almost 34,000 people, in 193 enterprises, spanning 42 countries worldwide, all of which work together in supporting dealers and distributors in over 100 countries. The Acer Group's revenue for 1999 was a staggering $ 8.4 billion US dollars.

How would you describe Acer's position in the mobile market?

In 1999 we achieved the number one position in the Italian market with our notebook brands. Acer can also boast to being the largest selling notebook brand in Taiwan, Indonesia and Austria amongst others. In the Asia Pacific region we tally as number two in the overall market, with a substantial 14% market share.

Our biggest and best achievement so far has to be our growth rate in the Middle Eastern market, rocketing to an impressive 106% growth for the Acer notebook series. Acer is amongst the top 3 notebook brands in UAE with a whopping 16.1% market share. Generally with regards to the portable computer market, the UAE itself has witnessed a remarkable growth of 122% (more than double the sales in the previous year). Compare that to the figures released by Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, where the growth rate amounted to approximately 50%.

What is Acer's focus for the future?

We've always maintained our focus on leading edge technology. Acer has distinguished itself in many ways; every product from desktop to laptop, from server to multimedia systems is designed and manufactured in-house. Which means that we are always on the ball when it comes to maintaining exceptional standards of quality and reliability.

The impressive results that we can quote can all be attributed to a large extent to our record setting penetration into the region's commercial sector. Sustaining this momentum therefore, must remain our company objective.

Whatever the future may hold we intend to continue production and provision of the state-of-the-art products that have got us where we are now. At the end of the day, our main concern is keeping the end user satisfied with the Acer product they have invested in. Each and every one of our products is rigorously tested for day-to-day wear and tear so we can guarantee that we have covered all the bases when it comes to providing quality assurance in the most demanding of environments.

If it all goes as well as it has been recently, we intend to spend more time and energy in the products that make mobile computing possible. On saying that things like the Flat panel PC and display products are making our engineers tick for the mean time.

How do you see Acer expanding in the world of mobile communication?

Since the very beginning all those years ago we have been investing heavily on bettering the resources on offer in the world of mobile computing. In addition a relatively high percentage of turnover has been exclusively devoted to research and development. Let it be said that our hard graft has not gone unnoticed; the Acer name has become tantamount with providing leading technology and state-of-the-art products to the end user - as can be seen from our numerous successesover the years.

Acer's focus on the latest technology solutions prove our commitment to excellence, our latest accomplishment has been in the field of security solutions. Fingertip validation has now been perfected by our engineers and we already offer the system on the newer Acer laptops, the TravelMate 739 is already in stores and dons the latest in security systems. Of course Smart Capabilities aren't new but again Acer can confidently stand proud as leaders of the innovation.
