The race between Bahraini telco operators Mena Telecom and MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) to be the first to launch WiMax in the Kingdom is hotting up. MTC-Vodafone, part of the MTC Group, yesterday said it plans to start the roll out of its WiMax service in July with availability of the full commercial service from September. The announcement comes shortly after rival Mena Telecom said it was finalising plans to roll out its own WiMax network without specifying a launch date. The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in Bahrain awarded national fixed wireless licences to both companies last year. Commenting on the launch, MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain)’s chief operating officer Dr Ahmed Alshatti said: “WiMax will empower MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) to fulfil all the telecommunication needs of customers, which will greatly enhance the ‘on the move’ experience and the service delivery time, making it ever easier to stay connected anywhere in the Kingdom.” “We were the first in Bahrain to offer a 3G service to customers and our 3.5G service is already enabling even faster mobile connection to the web and corporate email services. Our WiMax service will offer a superior alternative to standard broadband connectivity,” he added. MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) claims that it will be the first telecoms provider in the Gulf to offer full nationwide wireless high speed broadband internet. It also said it will be the first of the MTC Group to launch WiMax. Kuwait company MTC operates in six Middle Eastern and 14 sub-Saharan African countries in total. It operates as MTC-Vodafone in Kuwait and Bahrain, in Jordan as Fastlink, in Iraq as MTC Atheer, in Lebanon as MTC Touch, and in Sudan as Mobitel.
