Inmarsat signs landmark supply and distribution deal with Axiom Telecom

The agreement forms a core component of Inmarsat’s go-to-market strategy for its new handheld satellite phones, which will be available through Inmarsat’s distribution partners.

Mobile satellite services company Inmarsat has signed an exclusive agreement with Axiom Telecom, a Dubai-based retailer and distributor of mobile communications products, to manage the global distribution of Inmarsat’s forthcoming mobile and fixed satellite phones. The agreement forms a core component of Inmarsat’s go-to-market strategy for its new handheld satellite phones, which will be available through Inmarsat’s distribution partners. Axiom Telecom will support the Inmarsat channel as the exclusive logistics and repair partner for Inmarsat’s new voice services – stocking products, fulfilling orders, and providing maintenance services for the suite of handheld, fixed and maritime terminals and related peripherals. Inmarsat will launch the new voice services from early 3Q07. Initially available for service coverage across the Middle East, Asia and Africa, the satellite phones will undergo an extensive development programme before a global rollout of the service at the end of 2008. “The agreement is a milestone for Inmarsat as it represents the first exclusive collaboration of its kind for the company on a global level and with a Middle East based company, which demonstrates Inmarsat’s commitment to the region and belief in the regional companies on the global landscape,” commented Samer Halawi, vice president, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific of Inmarsat. Michael Butler, president and COO of Inmarsat said the handset satellite voice market currently stood at around US$350 million a year and that this figure was expected to grow to US$500 million by 2010, and Inmarsat expects to target a 10% market share at that time. “We appreciate that with the launch of the handheld voice service we are entering an established market, but we think we have a compelling proposition to offer,” Butler stated.
