Etisalat Misr, the Egyptian operations of the UAE telecom operator, has selected Sun Microsystems to provide solutions for its business and operational systems. Sun will provide Etisalat Misr with its Solaris Operating system and Java system directory server. It has also been selected as the preferred system for the telco’s SMS platform, which will run on a system provided by Atos Origin, the company said. “This is a significant deployment for Sun not only in the region, but also in the telecom sector and clearly reflects our growing success in Egypt,” Chris Cornelius, managing director, Sun Microsystems, MENA said. “We remain committed to support Etisalat Misr in its drive to expand its presence, increase subscriber base and become a leading service provider in Egypt,” he added. The value of the contract was not disclosed. Etisalat Misr’s deployment includes Sun Fire servers, including 64-bit processors with Chip Multi threading technology and the Solaris Operating System. “The newly-deployed infrastructure will help Etisalat Misr accelerate the rollout of its new telecom services in the market significantly reducing overall operational costs,” added Ossama Mahmoud, Sun Microsystems manager in charge of the Etisalat account.
