PC sales in EMEA rise 34.3% in first quarter

Strong demand for notebooks is driving PC sales in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, according to the latest research from IDC. Notebook sales during the first quarter of 2007 rose 34.3% compared to the same period last year boosting overall growth of PC shipments to the EMEA region to 13.2%, equivalent to 19.4 million units, according to the firm’s latest EMEA PC tracker. “Booming notebook sales across the entire region continued to act as the primary growth driver for most vendors,” Karine Paoli, research director for IDC’s personal computing group, noted. Notebook sales were particularly strong in parts of the Middle East, the firm said, helping offset flat desktop shipments. “Notebooks are growing at fast rates in the Middle East, representing twice the volume of desktops in Saudi Arabia, for example,” Eszter Morvay, senior analyst for IDC’s EMEA PC Tracker added. By vendor, HP and Acer continued to lead the market with Acer scoring 46.7% growth during the quarter. Dell, meanwhile, suffered a slight 1.3% drop in sales, which IDC attributed to slower corporate demand and retail competition in the consumer space.
