Bahrain Maritime and Mercantile International (BMMI) has awarded a US$1.2 million server and operating system contract to Sun Microsystems. The regional firm - whose operations span logistics and supply chain, sales and marketing, and support services – is to deploy Sun’s Solaris operating system and Sun Fire servers, with deployment slated to go live before the end of the year. Mike Kruger, chief information officer at BMMI, told ITP.net that it considered bids from IBM and HP before selecting Sun Microsystems for the contract. “Sun’s global recognition as leaders in the UNIX environment and the Sun Solaris operating system was the natural choice to provide us with enhanced capabilities,” he said. Scalability was a key factor in the selection process, he added. “We needed to build an environment that was scalable in nature to enable BMMI to grow its business seamlessly, both within Bahrain and beyond our natural borders,” he said. “Having built our enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions on a typical three tier architecture and single instance environment, the hardware infrastructure would need to be capable of delivering and meeting our requirements. This would require a migration to a UNIX environment.” The Sun Solaris Operating System will replace existing business applications based on Microsoft Windows operating system, the vendor said in a statement. “We have worked with BMMI closely to understand our business requirements and have been successful in fulfilling them through this implementation,” Hani Esber, territory sales manager Gulf, Sun Microsystems MENA commented on the win. BMMI is currently in the process of deploying a number of modules of Oracle’s E-Business Suite to boost efficiency. The implementation, which is being undertaken by Satyam, was scheduled to finish next month.
