Kuwait’s capital is reeling from the most hotly contested PC gaming event held there to date, namely the Windows Gaming Championship (WGC). The contest, which took place at Souq Sharq Mall in Kuwait City on Thursday May 17 and Friday 18 and was presented by LG Electronics, saw over 130 contestants battle it out for serious cash prizes and entry to this year’s regional WGC final in June. The first day’s Counterstrike Source team competition kicked off with 12 five-player teams playing in the first rounds. These rounds were held in a 15+1 format, meaning the first team to win 16 of 30 in-game rounds went through. Such was the popularity of the Counterstrike contest, the semi finals and finals actually rolled onto day two of WGC, when despite being the favourite going into the tournament, Team Q8 was wiped out by the smooth sniping Gameworks Clan (Ahmed Al Muhanna, Ahmed Al Sultan, Bader Al Khaldi, Kevin Russell and Yousef Al Saleem). Gameworks Clan's five players thus walked off with a winning team cheque for US$3000 and an invite to June’s regional final in Dubai. The second day also hosted WGC2’s individual player contest, in which footie fans got busy with their gamepads as no less than 64 players went head-to-head in WGC’s Pro Evo 6 soccer tournament. Playing a country each, players battled it out right through to the late evening final between Abdullah Al Mashaan (playing as Italy) and Shulaimey Al Shulaimey (France). Despite some frenzied attacking from France in this match-up, Abdullah just edged Shulaimey out to win the game 2-1, grab the winner’s cheque (for $1000) and the place in WGC2’s regional final. Stage two of this year’s regional WGC tournament will be held in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia, next weekend. Meanwhile the third UAE leg will take place mid-June. Interested in proving your mettle?
