PC vendor Acer is celebrating the endorsement of its strategy in East Africa after landing a deal with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education (MOE). The Taiwan-based vendor has been selected to supply 5,500 units of Intel-based desktops in a deal estimated at a cool US$3.5m. According to Acer, the project is the biggest of its kind in East Africa and an endorsement of its reputation in the region. “This deal is a significant milestone for Acer, and clearly demonstrates the strength and presence of Acer as a brand in the region,” said Sanjay Kachroo, product marketing manager, desktops and servers at Acer. With Africa’s IT sector growing rapidly, Acer eyes Ethiopia as one of the stronger markets. The vendor has a focus team looking after its interests in the Ethiopian IT market and will provide technical support to over 16 universities across the country that are benefiting from its deal with the Ethiopian MOE. “The education sector across the region is looking increasingly at the IT industry for support. It’s not just about supply and demand anymore, it’s about promoting the development and growth of the country’s education sector,” added Kachroo. Acer claims it already has a strong presence in Africa’s education sector, and has a dedicated team working on a strategy for the region. Naveen Sethi, country sales manager, English Africa at Acer, said: “From meeting the demand for high-end PC’s, to after sales and technical support, Acer has clearly positioned itself as a long-term vendor of choice for the region’s education sector,” he said.
