USRobotics has ramped up the functionality of one of its popular wireless gateway products by offering users a free VPN download. The company has added IPSec-based Virtual Private Network (VPN) to its Wireless MAXg ADSL2+ Gateway release (model number USRxx9108A) as part of the solution’s latest firmware (which is available for download from www.usr.com). IPSec-based VPNs provide what USRobotics claimed is one of the most secure private networks in use today, so that users can communicate confidentially over their wireless network. One widely-used application for instance is to provide a secure connection to a company network from either home or another remote office. However, a limitation of many of today’s VPN software clients is that once a VPN has been established, user can no longer access local network resources such as local printers and network attached storage devices. Whilst VPN hardware appliances do solve that problem, USRobotics this week claimed that these also introduce a far more serious concern for the IT manager, which is that they actually route traffic from all PCs on the remote network through the VPN tunnel to the company network. With the company’s new firmware for the Wireless MAXg ADSL2+ Gateway however, USR claimed that users can enjoy the benefit of connecting over a VPN to a company network while maintaining access to their local network resources, with the IT manager being able to rest assured that only the PCs that have been granted access to the tunnel will have access to the company network. In other words, all other traffic from the remote network will follow the normal flow to the internet. “IT managers do not want unauthorised computers connecting to the company network due to data confidentiality issues and a greater threat of viruses” said Tony Field, USRobotics’s product marketing manager for the EMEA region. “At the same time, users want to have access to local network resources while connected to the company network. Our new firmware allows both the IT managers and the remote users to meet their needs.” USRobotics’ VPN firmware upgrade is available for free until June 30, 2007.
