Fast-growing Saudi IT distributor Sariya Company has arrived in Riyadh this year enthused about promoting its winning Equallogic IP storage technology. The Equallogic name refers both to an enterprise class solution and the firm behind it - it is the latter that last year became the second largest IP networking vendor worldwide, according to research house IDC. “We have launched the product in the region already and quickly signed a couple of big deals,” explained James Mathew, Sariya’s general manager. “The German University in Qatar for example has brought on board Equallogic in the form of a 64 terabyte IP storage solution.” Mathew claims Equallogic, as the second placed IP storage vendor worldwide, is now actually ahead of EMC and Dell. The reason for the solution’s popularity is, he added, largely down to the fact that it’s both cost-effective to implement and highly scalable thereafter. “A customer can start from just 1.5 terabytes and this is then scalable up to 116 terabytes and all the management software covers the same single box solution,” Mathew explained. “The strategy with competitors such as EMC and Netapp is that they divide their products into three categories and the customer chooses the solution that fits their budget and requirements at the time. Say they purchase at the entry-level then the scalability is limited, meaning an upgrade is required when your business grows in the future - a painful and expensive process, which sometimes means a lot of failures.” In a recent Equallogic deployment, for Riyadh-based ISP SPS Net, the client deployed two boxes - currently 7.5 terabytes in total. “We are purely into distribution and focused specifically on certain areas of technology,” said Mathew. “Ours is therefore quite a different approach to that of most distributors who carry and sell everything. We’re focused specifically on three technology areas: storage - mainly IP storage - security products, both software and hardware-based, and thirdly, networking kit.” GITEX Saudi Arabia is a significant event for rapidly expanding Sariya. “We’re here to really address local companies’ needs,” Mathew commented. “While many of the brands that we carry we actually represent for the entire Middle East and Africa region, revenue-wise, 70% of our income actually comes from the Saudi Arabian market - it’s that important.”
