Google has released the fifth version of its desktop search app, which features an updated sidebar, a new security tool to prevent malware and phishing attacks and an instant preview feature. Unlike its predecessors, Google Desktop 5 -now in beta - boasts a new sidebar that can blend into a user’s desktop wallpaper by ‘sampling’ the image. The new version also includes instant preview, which shows the contents of a file without having to launch the app it was created with. Google has also updated its search app with a ‘Safe Browsing’ feature, which brings up malware warnings when clicking on web links that Google associates with disreputable sources, whether the links are in a browser, instant messenger, or e-mail. Those who wish to try Google Desktop 5 can download it for free from here. Last month Google made an entry into the broader desktop productivity market with the launch of a suite of web-based software called Google Apps Premier edition, which some analysts say could become a competitor to Microsoft Office.
