Game on for QMotions

With Nintendo’s active controller-equipped Wii gaming console breaking sales records in the US, software developers are rushing to cash in on the craze.

With Nintendo’s active controller-equipped Wii gaming console breaking sales records in the US, software developers are rushing to cash in on the craze. One of the leaders of the pack is QMotions, a US-based active gaming software developer, which in addition to its home market has its sights set firmly on gaining a foothold in the burgeoning Middle East gaming sector. The company’s innovative range of gaming accessories includes ‘full-motion’ golf clubs, ‘snowboards’ and baseball bats, and is targeted specifically at sporting games enthusiasts. Showcasing its products at the recent CES 2007 exhibition in Las Vegas, QMotions representative Jim Dennesen said the company had received significant interest from Middle East-based distributors keen to market the range in this region. “We’ve received a number of requests from distributors in Dubai who were keen to get involved in the business,” he said. “They have shown particular interest in our golf gaming products, which is understandable given the popularity of the sport in that region. “We’re very keen to investigate all opportunities that arise in the Middle East and are inviting interested parties to get in contact with us.” Dennesen explained that QMotions was founded in 2003 with the express aim of developing technology that would “get gaming enthusiasts off the couch”. “The aim was to put a degree of physicality into the gaming experience,” he explained. “We were out there in the field before Nintendo released Wii and now we are trying to ride the Wii wave.” QMotions is currently adapting its active motion software package to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 gaming console, and is looking to expand its relationships with the gaming software development community. “We are not interested in inventing new games,” said Dennesen. “We are gaming enthusiasts ourselves, so our priority is to develop exciting applications for existing games in conjunction with software developers. “There is a huge groundswell in consumer demand for interactive games that involve physical movement and we are well placed to tap the commercial opportunities that are being created as a result."
