Etisalat plans to launch commercial mobile operations in the Egyptian market before the end of February, according to recent reports. The Egyptian ministry of communications told press that Etisalat Egypt will commence mobile services under the 011 prefix and that the cellco will be able to offer 3G services to both prepaid and postpaid users in a selection of major Egyptian cities by the end of next month. According to CEO of Etisalat Egypt, Saleh Al Abdouli, the cellco will launch with 70% coverage of the population on its own network. Al Abdouli also expects to capture ten million mobile subscribers by 2010, representing a 25% share of the market. The Etisalat paid EGP16.9 billion (US$2.9 billion) for Egypt’s third GSM licence last July. Some analysts have pointed at the relatively low and falling average revenue per user in the Egyptian market and the current strength and stability of current incumbents Mobinil and Vodafone as evidence that Etisalat may have over-paid for the concession.
