Tarek Ghoul, North Gulf manager at networking giant Cisco, has urged companies in the dynamic oil and gas sector to focus on the business benefits that new technology adoption offers them. As part of the Kuwait Oil Company’s second IT group exhibition in Kuwait, Ghoul extolled the virtues of transformation to internet protocol (IP) based next generation networks, claiming that this technology is now critical for companies aiming to optimise business processes and achieve operational agility and maximum efficiency. “Technology is an enabler and can provide fundamental improvements for organisations operating in the oil and gas sector by delivering an experience that has a direct impact on enhancing operational efficiency, optimising cost structures and boosting overall business agility,” explained Ghoul. Ghoul claimed that the oil and gas sector remains one of the most dynamic market segments, increasing the need agile and flexible IT systems. “A host of factors create this inherent volatility, keeping the [oil and gas] industry on its toes,” commented Ghoul. “At the same time as having to cope with an environment in which little can be taken for granted, worldwide demand for oil is increasing, and in some countries, the annual increase in demand is reflected in double-digit growth.” Converged IP networks, which carry voice, video and data on the same network, optimise available bandwidth to ensure business continuity and reliable availability of information and applications across an entire enterprise, according to Cisco. The vendor contends that the speed and continuity of service with an IP network means that the problems of disruption are minimised and this fact alone creates wide-ranging advantages.
