Korean-based LG Electronics has unveiled a new standalone DVD player that can play both HD DVDs and Blu-ray DVDs. LG’s BH100 player - dubbed ‘Super Multi Blue’ - was unveiled at the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last week. The firm claims the BH100 is the first player on the market to play both next-generation disc formats, addressing the challenge of the current format war. Blu-ray is a data storage standard backed by a group of firms, which LG is a member of. The rival HD DVD format meanwhile is supported by a consortium that includes Toshiba. According to LG, the 50Gbyte player is ideally suited to LG’s expanded lineup of Full HD 1080p plasma and LCD HDTVs. “We’ve developed the Super Multi Blue Player to end the confusion caused by the current competition between Blu-ray and HD DVD formats. Customers are no longer forced to choose between these,” stated K. W. Kim, president of LG Electronics in this region. “As HD TV is already gaining ground, we are hoping that the Super Multi Blue player will play the trigger role in expanding and advancing both HD TV and high-definition DVD market volume together,” he concluded. The BH100 is expected to launch in the region in the next three months and will retail for approximately US $1200. Many industry analysts had speculated that such a dual-format player wouldn’t come to existence, stating that the price of such a player would simply be too high for consumers to even consider. However, priced at $1200, it seems that the LG’s BH100 has arguably proved them wrong. LG also plans to launch its GGW-H10N optical disk drive soon, which is compatible with both Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats. This PC component should also launch in the next three months.
