Saudi Post’s Wasel project turns to Oracle for support

Saudi Post has deployed components of Oracle’s E-Business software suite to help support its ambitious Wasel project to launch a door-to-door delivery system across Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Post has deployed components of Oracle’s E-Business software suite to help support its ambitious Wasel project to launch a door-to-door delivery system across Saudi Arabia. The national postal carrier has implemented Oracle’s E-Business Suite financial modules in a bid to tighten its control over costs, ensure projects stay within budget and provide management with a complete view of all accounting processes. Saudi Post has committed itself to providing a home delivery service — replacing the existing method of customers collecting mail from post offices —through the Wasel project. In order to launch a Kingdom-wide door-to-door delivery service, Saudi Post must install five million mailboxes and create a comprehensive electronic database of homes and personal information relating to recipients. The carrier’s task is particularly challenging due to the lack of street signs or house numbers in many parts of the Kingdom. To enable it to meet its goals, Saudi Post has deployed several high-tech solutions; in August this year it announced plans to deploy a Cisco network to link its 6,000 branches across the Kingdom (see IT Weekly 5-11 August 2006). The Oracle solution will ensure that the project managers behind the Wasel scheme will be able to manager the general ledger, accounts payable and accounts receivable modules in an integrated solution, providing the whole project team with a clear view of all financial activity. It will also allow Saudi Post to integrate its financial system with point-of-sale machines in its branches, boosting revenue and improving business cycle control at a later date. “Expansion and innovation are key elements in serving the citizens of Saudi Arabia,” commented Majed Ismail, IT director of Saudi Post. “Working closely with the Oracle consultants enabled both the core Saudi Post team and the Express Mail Service team to benefit from their expertise in the implementation process, meaning that we minimised training requirements once the system was in place.” Abdul Rahman Theiban, vice president Oracle of Saudi Arabia, said the technology would help to support Saudi Post’s aim of delivering a more efficient delivery service. “Saudi Post has a long history of top-quality service and innovative responses to the changing face of communication,” claimed Theiban. “Leveraging enterprise technology from Oracle will allow Saudi Post to benefit from better business information from their existing data, leading to better business results,” he went on to add.
