Internationally recognised travel professional certifications should be a standard industry requirement, TRS Consulting’s principal consultant, Sundar Vasudaven has declared. He was speaking after the Dubai-based training specialist was recently appointed as the licensed training centre of The Travel Institute, USA, bringing professional travel certifications to the Middle East for the first time. “It’s the only internationally recognised certification in travel, which is exactly what is needed in order to actually set up a national standard of knowledge and excellence within the travel industry,” said Vasudaven. He believes there is a need to create standardisation within the industry if travel professionals want to survive the dramatic shifts in the way travel is booked and paid for. “They have done it for hospitality; here is an option to do it for the travel and tourism industry,” he said. The responsibility of training should come down to employers, but individuals that wish to ride the wave of change as it surges through the travel trade should think about investing in training themselves, he added. As of January, TRS Consulting will provide a range of courses focusing on several specialist areas; the Certified Travel Associate (CTA) and the Certified Travel Counsellor (CTC) certification programmes are targeted at front line professionals, team leaders, supervisors and middle management, while the Certified Travel Industry Executive (CTIE) is designed for experienced senior travel professionals in senior management or leadership positions. Students can select a range of elective modules from each course. They can also opt to attend classroom training seminars before tackling the official test in official examination conditions, or follow a self-study programme online. TRS Consulting currently conducts travel industry training in the UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Sri Lanka and India.
