Sopexa Middle East has revealed that more than 100 French wine producers have expressed an interest in entering the UAE market; yet they face the burden of the distributor monopoly. “There has been a lot of interest shown in the region, particularly after the success received by French companies at the last Gulfood exhibition. More companies want to come here with wines, such as from Burgundy and Bordeaux, as well as various French water brands,” said Eric Santier, managing director, Sopexa Middle East. Specialising in the marketing of French food and drink, Santier said it was necessary for the company to find a more effective way of working with the current distributors a+e and MMI. He revealed that Sopexa hoped to organise a wine exhibition for French producers in the coming months. “The way the situation stands now, is that the distributors cannot increase their portfolios. However, over 100 wine companies have contacted the French Embassy and Sopexa. In other markets, you can find 10 to 15 importers just for hotels, so there is a real need for more choice,” Santier added.
