Barracuda’s bid to slam spam in ME

BARRACUDA NETWORKS, supplier of anti-spam and anti-virus e-mail protection is bracing itself for an unprecedented increase in demand for its services in the Middle East. Barracuda Networks has around 40,000 customers worldwide who have purchased the Barracuda Spam Firewall - an integrated hardware and software solution. “Over the last six months we have seen an increase in spam by around 70%. Whereas before we dealt with 700 million e-mail messages per day, we’re now processing up to 1.3 billion,” says Dean Drako, President and CEO of Barracuda Networks. Following the prediction that 50 billion spam messages will be sent each day by 2007, at a cost to businesses of almost US $200 billion per year, Barracuda have outlined their forecast for the region. “This market has been a little slow to develop. E-mail has not been widely used, but now the problem of spam viruses is becoming widespread. Here at GITEX, we’ve had tremendous interest in solutions from Arabic firms, which have not yet installed products to protect themselves,” added Drako. Having formed just three years ago, Barracuda can identify with the UAE model of rapid growth. The firm has already secured two distributors in the region, including FVC, operating out of Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Beirut, and Gateway International.
