Samsung Electronics has thrown down the portable digital audio gauntlet at this year's GITEX with the launch of the K5 Digital Audio Player: a flash-memory based MP3 player with built-in speakers, LCD display and a sleek one-button design. Most MP3 players are a solitary experience. Either you plug in earphones or you have to lug around bulky, external speakers in order for anyone else to hear. The Samsung K5 offers two small speakers built right into the compact device. At the same time, users on-the-go can still listen to music privately with a set of base thumping ear buds. Samsung states the K5 breaks new ground in both form and functionality. It is also the company’s first digital audio player to use OLED technology. The player’s display features ice blue graphics, while the menu and navigation system has been designed to make navigation simple. Additional functions include an alarm clock, which allows owners to wake up to their favorite songs, rather than a jolting alarm clock buzz. “Samsung is continuously looking for opportunities to broaden the scope of consumer benefits in our portable digital audio category,” said D.S. Jun, senior vice president and general manager of Samsung Electronics’ AV Division. “In addition to offering consumers the freedom to choose their music service, Samsung added a built-in speaker to eliminate the bulky add-ons or extra wires once needed to share the listening experience with their families and friends,” he adds. To coincide with the launch of the K5, Samsung developed the MPFreedom campaign, which it says demonstrates the freedom of choice music subscription services offer consumers. “This campaign represents the benefit of not being held down to one particular outlet, but to living wirelessly, and express individuality,” says Jun. The K5 sports is now available in the United Arab Emirates at AED 699 for 1GB, AED 799 for 2GB and AED 999 for 4GB versions.
