Transcend lifetime flash warranty deemed a “gimmick”

Memory and flash product vendor Transcend’s expansion of its lifetime warranty scheme is nothing more than a marketing gimmick, according to one of its key competitors.

Memory and flash product vendor Transcend’s expansion of its lifetime warranty scheme is nothing more than a gimmick, according to one of its key competitors. Speaking to Windows Middle East today, Bhaqwan Mulani, the regional sales manager of flash memory product vendor Lexar Europe, said: “Consumers don’t keep products such as flash disks for a long time. They like to change them, which is why a lifetime warranty is a bit of a marketing gimmick really.” Transcend this week expanded the lifetime warranties it rolled out earlier this month - for its memory modules - to cover all Transcend SD, MMC and CF flash memory cards (excluding CF Industrial models) and all JetFlash USB flash drives (except the JetFlash 210) bought since January of this year. These Transcend warranties specifically include free service and repair for product damage caused during normal use (rather than by third-party products or components). In comparison, Mulani says Lexar Media’s value flash card warranties of five years and two-year USB flash disk support periods are perfectly sufficient. The firm does offer lifetime support however for its Professional range of cards and drives (defining these models as those with a high data transfer speed of x133).
