FedEx wireless strategy enters Middle East

FedEx's strategy to implement wireless technology across its global operations has reached the Middle East.

FedEx is continuing its strategy to implement wireless technology across its global operations, with the deployment of the FedEx Power Pad in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait. The new system is currently being implemented across Europe as part of a global development plan to deploy 50,000 devices to FedEx couriers in more than 60 countries by 2007. The company claims the Power Pad increases courier efficiency and enhances customer service by providing wireless access to the FedEx network, allowing couriers to send and receive realtime information whilst away from their delivery vans. The system will replace FedEx Super Tracker, the current handheld courier device, with new features including Bluetooth wireless technology and a General Packet Radio Service (DPPRS) connectively network. It also includes electronic signature capture, electronic pickup manifest, hands-free data transmission and automatic scan transmission. “FedEx is continually innovating and designing new technologies to help us provide customers with ever-greater levels of service, and this is the latest example of this,” said Hamdi Osman, FedEx vice president for the Middle East, Indian Sub-Continent and Africa. “We have always been a front runner in the wireless technology area, and were the first company to make shipping and tracking information available to customers online at our website.”
