Cycling enthusiast and hotel industry stalwart, Thomas Tapken, has escaped the Dubai heat and the pressure of opening four new properties, and completed an eight-day 800km bike ride around Thailand. The dedicated hotelier, who is currently preparing to open four hotels in the last quarter of 2007, joined 19 other pedal pushers from Dubai at the end of last month and cycled from Bangkok Phuket – just for the fun of it! Tapken’s trip took in Hua Hin, Prachuap Kiri Khan, Ban Krut, Chumporn, Ranong, Khuraburi and Khao Lak. It marks the second year the hotel GM-cum-athlete has cycled through Thailand as last year, he and nine others pedaled their way from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. Next year he hopes more cyclists will join him and use the event to raise money for a local charity. In the meantime, readers may notice Tapken practicing his form along the Al Khail Road – the road he cycles from home to work at Al Quoz Industrial Estate where the Movenpick showroom for Movenpick Hotel Deira; Movenpick Resort Oceania, Palm Jumeirah; Movenpick Resort & Spa, Palm Jumeirah; and Ibn Battuta Hotel Dubai, is currently located. See page 10 for more details on the company’s expansion plans.
