Carillion wins race to build Motor City

Al Futtaim Carillion bags US $376 million contract to build 34 apartment blocks in Dubailand

Al Futtaim Carillion has picked up a contract worth more than US $376 million (AED1.4 billion) to build 34 apartment blocks as part of the massive Motor City project in Dubailand. Work will involve the construction of three- to five-storey residential buildings, each with two levels of car parking underneath, along with the hard and soft landscaping of the entire site, confirmed Alan Mack, head of building services, Al Futtaim Carillion. The apartment blocks are being built in ‘Uptown Motor City Area Two’, part of the $1.1 billion mixed-use scheme. The company was also awarded the $75 million infrastructure contract for the project, which is being developed by Dubai-based Union Properties, earlier this year. “Infrastructure work started in April and is due to go on for a year. It involved infrastructure work for the entire project, as well as the Green Community Motor City,” said Mack. “The residential project is much more significant. We’ve received a letter of intent and plan to start work on 1 November, with completion expected in May 2009.” Al Futtaim Carillion also worked on Motor City’s 2.79 million m2 Dubai Autodrome, which was completed in 2004. The latest contract win follows the award earlier this month of a $256 million lump sum contract to Nasa Multiplex for the construction of Auto Mall, a 38-storey office tower and three-level auto showroom at Motor City. Spread over 2.78 million m2, Motor City will feature motor-related corporate, retail, residential and entertainment segments. The development’s five key components include Dubai Autodrome, Formula One Theme Park, Business Park Motor City, and the residential zone that includes Uptown Motor City and Green Community Motor City. Low-rise residential development will cover an area of 550,000m2 and will include 3,223 housing units, made up of one, two and three-bedroom apartments and villas, while Auto Mall will be built over an area of 65,000m2. Business Park Motor City is expected to attract tenancy from high-profile auto-related companies, while the $360 million Formula One Theme Park will provide entertainment such as simulator rides, live demonstrations, an interactive museum, retail outlets, restaurants and souvenir shops. Dubai-based Edara is the project manager, while the UK’s Currie and Brown was appointed QS in January this year. The entire development, which is located 25km from central Dubai, has been earmarked for completion in late 2008. Al Futtaim Carillion’s other major projects in Dubai include Dubai Festival City, Burj Dubai Downtown, Emirates Hills and Dubai Marina Towers.
