Batelco turns to Cisco to deliver managed services

Bahrain telecommunications service provider Batelco has signed a new partnership agreement with networking giant Cisco to help it deliver managed ICT services to its customers in Bahrain.

Bahrain telecommunications service provider Batelco has signed a new partnership agreement with networking giant Cisco to help it deliver managed ICT services to its customers in Bahrain. Cisco will be working with Batelco to enable the telecom operator to develop and offer managed ICT services to the enterprise and small and medium-sized business (SMB) market in the country. “Cisco will work with Batelco in helping it create an enhanced portfolio of managed ICT services in unified communications, in data, in security, across the enterprise public sector and small and medium businesses,” Nadim Khoury, regional manager for service providers at Cisco told IT Weekly. “We’ve worked in the managed services spaces [with Batelco before] but not with this level of velocity. We have a major agreement to really focus on this space and augment Batelco’s position as one of the strongest telecom players in Bahrain,” he added. Khoury said Cisco will be working together with Batelco’s sales, marketing and engineering teams in developing these services and taking them to market. “We plan to make sure that Batelco is supported with the right level of resources from Cisco to help them succeed in the Bahraini market with managed ICT services,” he went on to say. In addition to managed services, Cisco will also be helping Batelco to develop its wireline and mobile infrastructure, and deliver triple-play services — voice, video and data traffic — into real estate developments in Bahrain as well as build its broadband services as part of its ‘broadband Bahrain’ project which sees Batelco migrating to an all- internet protocol (IP) network. “Cisco will be working closely with Batelco on several service areas critical for the development of any new world telecom infrastructure,” said Samer Alkharrat, general manager, Cisco Gulf, in a statement. “The concept of managed services, for example, is prevalent in Europe and the US, and is picking up pace in this region.” “Batelco will be one of the service providers in the region that is planning to embrace managed services,” he claimed. Although this is a new agreement, Cisco has been working with Batelco over a number of years helping the telecom operator to upgrade and develop its telecommunications structure. As previously revealed by IT Weekly (see IT Weekly 18-24 June 2005), Cisco has already provided an IP/MPLS infrastructure to Batelco. “Our collaboration with Cisco is part of Batelco’s commitment to providing world class service and technological capacity throughout its network,” stated Peter Kaliaropoulos, CEO of Batelco. In addition to Bahrain, Batelco also operates in Jordan, Kuwait and Egypt. The telecom operator recently reported net profits of US$186.8million for the first nine months of this year and an 8.3% increase in group net profits for Q306 over the same period last year.
