The latest interior design firm to realise the business potential in this region is London-based Blanchard Interiors who are opening an office in Dubai this month. Established in the UK capital in 1991, Blanchard Interiors focuses on high-end residential projects and CID caught up with Diana Blanchard, founder and managing director of Blanchard UK, and Marie-Noëlle Swiderski, managing director Blanchard Dubai, to find out what prompted this expansion to the Gulf. “Blanchard in London has developed tremendously over its fifteen years of existence and we felt it was time to seek new ventures. Dubai is at a particularly interesting juncture in its growth, with incredible synergy between architecture and design. Therefore, the Middle East seemed to be a perfect destination for our new sister company,” Diana Blanchard explains. The focus of the company is more on residential interiors than hospitality projects, Swiderski adds: “It is clear that, due to the evolving demographics in Dubai and the volume of ongoing development, interior designed exclusive residential space is coming into its own.” So how does Blanchard plan to influence the region’s interiors? “We have been fascinated by the plethora of available existing styles and feel that there is a constantly evolving landscape. We will bring to Dubai the same design ethos, meticulous attention to detail and love for our work that has forged our reputation in the United Kingdom.” She continues, “we develop interiors that are timeless, harmonious and very much in sympathy with the lifestyle of their end user. The expansion of the private residence sector within Dubai presents great opportunities for the design of beautiful and diverse properties.” Blanchard is already in the enviable position of securing for itself a prime project in Dubailand. Plantation is a 20 million sq.ft equestrian and country club development that will house a five star boutique hotel and 110 colonial manor houses. The developers are emphasising the natural refinement that Blanchard cites as a house style. “We are delighted to be building a relationship with Plantation Holdings, who are developing a landmark project in Dubailand. We will be involved in designing the interiors of the elegant, classical residences located on this unique site,” Swiderski says. In its previous projects in the UK, the interior design firm has consistently asserted its intention to promote the use of sustainable and organic products in its designs. If it maintains this ethos when designing for the Gulf, this is yet another step in the direction of environmentally-friendly interiors.
