China Southern Airlines has revealed plans to operate a Dubai-Guangzhou service three times weekly from October 12, in a bid to cater to significant demand for business travel between the two locations. The carrier will also launch a three-times-per-week Dubai-Lagos service on the same day, marking the first time a Chinese airline has flown to Africa. In addition, China Southern, which already operates a Dubai-Beijing service three times weekly, told ATN it hoped to increase its frequencies from the Middle East to China in the near future and was currently waiting to win the rights to open up new routes. “The Middle East market offers great opportunities. The business travel is already there, but the leisure market has potential,” said Rayomand Kasad, sales and marketing executive at China Southern Airlines’ UAE office based in Dubai. “We need to focus more on leisure and we are currently working with Chinese inbound tour operators to develop packages.” Both Kasad and China Southern’s sales manager for the Gulf and Middle East, Jiang Nan, said the new Dubai-Guangzhou route, which departs on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, would not only furnish trade between the two regions, but would offer travellers 250 onward connections to domestic and international locations. The pair are raising agent awareness of China Southern’s new routes by making sales calls and releasing flyers with package and flight details. The airline pays 7% commission on air tickets issued at their agency, 6% on those issued at the China Southern office, and 10% on holiday packages. The return Guangzhou-Dubai flights will depart Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the Dubai-Lagos service will depart Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
