The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has appointed a dedicated Gulf representative for the first time, in a bid to boost the travel and tourism opportunities in both regions. The association has nominated Nicki Page, the executive director of Dubai-based tourism marketing consultancy, Fusion Marketing Management, as PATA director for the Gulf, making her responsible for strengthening PATA’s membership in the region, which until now, was overseen by PATA’s European representative. “PATA has been looking at this region and the increase in business flows between here and Asia Pacific. The increase in business to countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, India, Australia and China is phenomenal,” said Page. “We now need to build an understanding of what PATA is and to encourage the [GCC travel] industry, and associated industries, to become members of PATA, which can facilitate meaningful relationships [in both regions].” Key PATA members to date include Qatar Tourism, Gulf Air, and most recently, Emirates Holidays and luxury hotel group, Jumeirah. “We are just waiting for a decision from the Dubai Tourism Commerce Marketing (DTCM),” said Page. One of the key benefits of PATA membership, she added, included the “the opportunity to network with key contacts in Asia Pacific”, and to grow inbound and outbound business between the GCC and Asia Pacific countries. PATA also conducts extensive travel and tourism-related research, including individual market reports, and last month staged its annual contracting and networking show, PATA Travel Mart in Hong Kong (September 12-15). Fusion Marketing arranged for a 10-strong delegation from the Gulf to attend the event, but plans to lead a larger group at next September’s instalment, which is scheduled to take place in Bali.
