The Oberoi Group has revealed plans to introduce a third luxury Nile cruiser in response to overwhelming demand for its top-end Nile cruising itineraries. Exact details of the new vessel are yet to be revealed by the Calcutta-headquartered group, only that it will set sail by mid-2007. It is hoped the introduction of a third Nile cruiser will raise the profile of the Oberoi brand in the Middle East and the popularity of Nile cruises with the region’s travel market, particularly ex-pats. “The majority of our [Nile cruise] clients are currently from the UK and the US and so as far as the ex-pat market [in the Gulf] is concerned, there is a lot of scope,” said Lincy Isaac, director of sales and marketing, Oberoi Hotels and Resorts, who is based in Dubai in a bid to boost trade awareness of what the company has to offer. “If the British travel all the way from the UK to Egypt for a Nile cruise, there is no reason why they won’t travel from the Gulf. We are gradually raising our profile in this market, first explaining our product to travel agents and now with PR and marketing.” She said that “years ago”, the Middle East market for Egypt was “much larger than it is now”, but believed that once Oberoi opened its new Dubai property in Business Bay, brand recognition would boost sales to other locations where the company owned operations. At present, the Oberoi Group operates two luxury Nile cruisers; the Oberoi Philae and Oberoi Shehrazad. Both are proving so popular that they are “invariably full” according to Isaac. Key features of the Oberoi Philae, which operates five- and seven-day Nile cruise itineraries, include air-conditioned cabins with satellite TV and internet access, a fine-dining restaurant, outdoor plunge pool and fitness centre. Services include laundry, same-day ironing and a private docking area in Luxor and Aswan. The Nile cruise experience is complemented by Oberoi’s two luxury properties, Mena House Oberoi in Cairo and The Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh on the Red Sea.
