The Computer Systems Division of Toshiba has recalled Sony-manufactured notebook batteries that were used in several of its notebook models manufactured between March and May of this year. An unspecified number of Middle East components are thought to be affected. Unlike the Sony-made batteries that were recalled recently by Dell and Apple respectively, Toshiba’s troublesome components are not thought to pose a fire risk or any other type of danger to users. The affected components, which were sold with notebooks in the firm’s Satellite, Satellite Pro and Tecra Series laptops and as accessories between March and May 2006, may struggle to properly charge or discharge and thus stop supplying notebooks with power. Last month a Toshiba spokesperson told Windows Middle East that its batteries were in no way affected by the overheating problems Dell and Apple batteries had experienced this summer. In a statement released to the region’s press today, Ahmed Khalil, the general manager of Toshiba Computer Systems Middle East and Africa, explained that this was still very much the case, as the battery issue outlined today is an entirely separate problem: "Toshiba would like to clarify that this issue is in no way related to recent problems experienced by other manufacturers and therefore previous statements made by Toshiba are still valid,” Khalil said. “The affected batteries do not overheat, or pose any safety issue or concern." Toshiba is offering to replace any affected batteries found in this region free of charge and has launched a Toshiba Battery Replacement Program page on its website to help laptop owners work out whether or not their machines might be affected. As such, Toshiba Satellite, Satellite Pro and Tecra notebook owners who bought their machines or replacement batteries between March and May of this year should visit www.toshiba-europe.com/battery.
