Following months of struggle with Bahrain’s regulator, the country’s telco, Batelco, has officially announced its BD10 per month broadband internet service. From October 10, consumers in the Kingdom will be able to reap the benefits of this cut-price surfing set-up, which Batelco claims is “the most affordable internet offer for the Kingdom of Bahrain and across the GCC”. With download speeds of up to 256Kbit/s (kilobits per second), and a data threshold of two gigabytes per month, Batelco reckons its new internet plan will easily satisfy the needs of most light to moderate users; in other words those who don’t want to download large video and music files but prefer high-speed web browsing and e-mailing. Batelco made its first application to the Kingdom’s TRA for a BD10 internet package in January 2006, but after five months of further submissions to the authority, pre-registration and any further marketing of the product was blocked by a TRA Emergency Order (click here for the full story). However, following Batelco’s court win last month (here), in which Bahrain’s Senior Civil Court suspended the TRA’s Emergency Order, this new internet service has been fully approved by the TRA, and meets the conditions the TRA imposed in June relating to a separate service to be supplied to Batelco’s competitors. “We are delighted that the TRA’s approval will now give the people of Bahrain a real value-for-money internet service,” said Batelco’s chief executive, Peter Kaliaropoulos. “Batelco has shown again that it is an innovator and market leader, not just in the Kingdom but across the GCC.” Consumers can pre-register for the new 10BD service from September 13 onwards.
