Ice cream gives cows the hump

Al Ain Dairy's latest product, a range of ice cream made with camel's milk, will soon be available in outlets across the UAE.

Al Ain Dairy, one of the UAE’s largest producers of dairy products, has launched a new range of ice cream made with camel’s milk. The product, which is naturally low in fat and contains three times more vitamin C than ice cream made with cows milk, is already available in Al Ain Dairy’s Farm Fresh outlets, and Union Coops in Abu Dhabi. It will also soon be available in Spinneys and Carrefour outlets across the UAE. Al Ain Dairy is optimistic that the ice cream, which is being sold in strawberry, chocolate and caramel flavours in single serve 100-gram packs, will be a success, not least because of its health benefits and the popularity of camel’s milk among local Arabs. Indeed, ice camel’s milk has a number of advantages compared with cow’s milk; it contains just 2.5% fat, three times more vitamin C than cow’s milk, and is also suitable for people who are lactose intolerant. “We have already been selling camels milk for a couple of years, then we decided to make ice cream with it, partly so that people who are lactose intolerant or can’t drink products made with cow milk can enjoy ice cream,” Werner Skaba, Al Ain Dairy’s senior plant manager, told Retail News Middle East. “Of course, this is also a commercial project, we have to bring new products into the market and that’s why we decided to go into ice cream. While sales of Camels milk seems to be limited mainly to local Arabs, Skana thinks that the ice cream could have a broader appeal, partly because it tastes the same as regular cows milk ice cream and also has health benefits. “A lot of Europeans don’t like the idea of camel’s milk. When you taste the ice cream you realise the only difference is that it is lower fat. When you taste camels milk and cows milk you can taste a difference, but with the ice cream, there is little difference because of the other ingredients you put in.”
