Donors from around the world have pledged US $940 million (LBP1.4 trillion) towards the reconstruction of Lebanon – almost twice the original target of $500 million. The money was pledged at an international donors’ conference in Sweden. Officials claim that the indirect costs to the economy, including lost tourism and industry revenue, would run into billions of dollars. “Although it’s still too early to give a firm view on figures, we’re estimating the total loss at around $10 billion – not only in rebuilding, but on other things that have been affected such as investments in the economy,” said Ghazi Kraytem, president, Beirut Chamber of Commerce.
