Qatar Engineering Construction Company (Qcon) has won a US $60 million (QR221.7 million) contract to build a melamine plant and revamp a urea plant in Qatar. Qatar Fertiliser Company (Qafco) awarded the contract for the work, which will be executed in Mesaieed. The package includes construction of the new melamine plant and revamping of the existing Urea-1 plant, and covers civil engineering, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation installation activities at the Qafco site. Construction will start in the fourth quarter of this year and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2009. The melamine plant will be the largest in the Middle East and the second largest in the world. Second deputy premier, minister of energy and industry, Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah, said: “The project will have a capacity of 60,000 tonnes per year and will target the local market, Europe and the US.” Qafco has signed an engineering and procurement contract for the project with Italian firm Eurotecnica. The firm has also struck a deal with Swiss firm Urea Casale involving the Urea-1 revamp and melamine integration within the Qafco complex. Qcon is the first Qatari firm to be awarded a construction contract of this magnitude within Qatar’s flourishing oil and gas industry. Once operational, the melamine project will boost Qafco’s profitability by adding extra value to its urea production. The project will also help create job opportunities for nationals and enable the Qatari employees of Qafco to acquire advanced expertise in the design, construction and operation of large-scale industrial projects. Melamine has widespread industrial and commercial applications and is used in laminates, wood adhesives, surface coatings and textile treating and moulding compounds.
