Windows Mobile 5.0 device manufacturer i-mate has launched two new 3G handsets - the SP Jas smartphone and JasJam PDA - which are the first i-mate handhelds to feature thumb-wheels for easy menu navigation. i-mate has also extended its Arabic offering to users in the region by allowing almost all applications on the SP Jas and JasJam to be run in Arabic. The SP Jas is a smartphone release, while the JasJam is a fully-featured Microsoft Windows Pocket PC (a.k.a. a PDA). According to i-mate, the JasJam is also one of the first products in the world to offer 3G (WCDMA), EDGE and WiFi global roaming access. “A recent study by Canalys confirmed that the market for mobile office functionality is rapidly increasing,” said i-mate’s recently appointed global sales director, Jack Craine. “We have developed an extended range of high-speed, multi-functional i-mate models to address this need, especially for small and medium sized organisations and large corporates across the Middle East.” Both new devices feature the latest version of Windows Mobile 5, which is pre-loaded with Microsoft’s Exchange Direct Push technology. This makes both products ‘push’ e-mail capable, meaning users can gain instant access to e-mails, in addition to being able to open and view Microsoft Office attachments in Word, Excel and PowerPoint Mobile formats (in both English and Arabic). “Microsoft Windows Mobile phones are now the preferred solution for business users to access data on the move,” Crane added. “The JasJam and SP Jas take on-the-go productivity to a new level of speed and set the benchmark for mobile wireless computing.” In addition to i-mate’s new scroll wheel, a touch-screen display and slider QWERTY keyboard, the SP Jas features a 2.0 megapixel camera with macro mode. Both the SP Jas and the JasJam also feature second lenses to allow video conferencing. The SP JAS and JasJam are available now at US $888 and $544 respectively. A complimentary trial version of i-mate Suite – the firm’s own mobile device management solution – comes pre-installed on each device.
